A Grand Old Flag

in time for the Fourth

As is my yearly Fourth of July custom, I am sharing with you my favorite patriotic cake—one I have made myself and can vouch for its deliciousness.

The decorating is a little labor intensive (by my standards), but your loved ones will appreciate your efforts. They will show their gratitude by devouring your hard work.

FLAG CAKE
Ingredients
18 tablespoons (2 1/4 sticks) unsalted butter at room temperature... READ MORE

Happy Birthday to ... a Whole Bunch of Us!

There’s going to be a bit of celebrating and cake-eating in the days ahead ...

Today, is our dear Rachel’s birthday. On Wednesday, both Rebecca and I will turn 23 wink and then next Wednesday, Lisa will be celebrating her birthday on the 15th.

This year will be a special birthday for me—my oldest daughter, Kateri, will be confirmed that evening and that will be the loveliest gift I could hope for.

Please join me in wishing all these other lovely Faith & Family ladies a whole lotta love and happiness (and chocolate) on their birthdays!

How I Do It

When people ask me how I find time to do all the things I do (like write or pray the Divine Office), I usually tell them it’s because I have lowered some of my housekeeping/homemaking standards to a shocking level. My methods of doing laundry would probably be rated R by Martha Stewart. And my son’s recent “birthday cake” is another example.

If you are one of those moms who makes gorgeous birthday... READ MORE

10 Hours Making, 2 Minutes Breaking

If you have the patience, here are instructions for making an Angry Birds cake.

Or you could be like me and just marvel at the video.

Very Hungry Caterpillar Cake

http://cococakecupcakes.blogspot.com/

This is for Arwen, and for those of you who contributed to her posts on children’s literature.

There’s a cake for almost everything you loved—and hated—here.

I think Moishe from Where the Wild Things Are is my favorite. Yours?

(If you go exploring the hilarious Cakewrecks site, be warned that not everything’s PG-rated.)

Bake Up Some Food of the Angels

Happy Feast Day!

Happy Feast of the Arch Angels!

With a Gabrielle, Raphael, and Michael (middle name) in the house, I figure I owe my family a cake today.

And what better cake to serve on the feast of the angels than a heavenly angel food cake? You can make a mix or bake up your own with this simple recipe:

Angel Food Cake

12 eggs
1 1/4 cups confectioners’ sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar... READ MORE

Sunshine in a Cake

more fun with frosting

Over the weekend, we had a very special young lady in the house turn 15, and this happy-looking cake was part of the celebration.

Yes, those are Twinkies.

No, I don’t usually “bake” with Twinkies.

But Kateri has had her eye on this cake ever since she spotted the recipe in one of my Taste of Home cookbooks a while back.

It really was easy and fun to put together. I made this one on a bit of a smaller... READ MORE

Celebrating One!

At the end of Blaise's first year

At 5:26am a year ago today, our little boy was born.

In celebration of his birthday, we had a casual family party this weekend. In honor of being an entire year old, the baby got his very first piece of cake all to himself.

At Camilla’s one-year party, she didn’t quite get the hang of the cake, instead choosing to smear frosting in her hair. Blaise, on the other hand, caught on right away, and was... READ MORE

The Cake Her Little Brother Ruined

tastes like forgiveness

Poor Juliette.

Yesterday afternoon, she asked to bake a special cake and I said yes. When you are a 9-year-old baked goods enthusiast and your mother gives you free reign in the kitchen, it’s a special day indeed.

She baked a vanilla cake, let it cool (“Can I frost it yet? Isn’t it cool enough now? Can you check it one more time? Is it ready to frost yet?”), and then made the frosting.

She had an... READ MORE

A Grand Ole Flag

and a yummy one, too!

The following is an award-winning Fourth of July cake—I know this to be true because a few years ago I took second place in our neighborhood July 4th dessert contest! (Long-time readers will understand why I wept with joy upon hearing the news.)

The cake comes to us by way of The Barefoot Contessa, Ina Garten, and is every bit as delicious as it is patriotic and cute. I’m including the recipe here... READ MORE
