Creative Cakes for Upcoming Feasts

Bake up these beauties for the feasts of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary
Immaculate Heart of Mary

Reader Amy Cara really impressed me when she sent along the pictures of these gorgeous cakes she made (See the Sacred Heart one after the jump).

She writes:

“I wanted to share these pictures of the cakes I made for our Home Enthronement to the Sacred Heart of Jesus that we just celebrated recently. With the Sacred Heart and Immaculate Heart feast days rapidly approaching (June 19 and June 20 repsectively),... READ MORE

Finding Pokemon on a Cake

and lessons learned along the way

We moms know little kids’ birthday cake angst. And Amy Welborn knows it in a special way this year.

It was also a reminder of how the simplest things we do for each other might have an impact far beyond the obvious. Who knows what huge bridge someone is trying to cross when they need something small from us? Who knows what a difference our outstretched hands make in someone’s longer journey, which probably holds difficulties far beyond what they let on.

A touching story and an important reminder for all of us. Go read the whole thing.

Mardi Gras

Do you celebrate?

Here’s a helpful guide to the traditional observances of “Fat Tuesday.”

While I wouldn’t be caught dead in New Orleans this time of year, I appreciate the spirit behind the idea of “feasting” before a fast.

The fact that we get ready for the season of Lent by using up all the rich foods we’ll be avoiding over the next 40 days really makes an impression on my children.

At my house today, we’ll be baking... READ MORE

Chocolate Cake in a Mug

5 minutes to sweet satisfaction

It sounded too good to be true.

Chocolate cake in 5 minutes? When I saw the recipe around the internet, it intrigued me.

Then, when Michelle emailed me the recipe, I knew it was meant to be.

I picked a bleak afternoon (those are rather easy to come by these December days) and told some of the boys we were going to make chocolate cake. In a coffee mug. In five minutes.

They were game.

1 large coffee... READ MORE

The Customer Is Always Misunderstood

Trust but verify, even with cake

“Write underneath that, ‘We will miss you’” sounds just like….

This is my absolute favorite. Or possibly this.

Black Forest Birthday Cake

awesomely easy

Though Stephen’s birthday was a few days ago, we had our family party today.

Last week, Stephen had a small pre-celebration of his birthday at my mother’s house. There, she treated him to a Black Forest Cake.

It was a hit.

Though for months he has been planning to have a chocolate-vanilla marble cake for birthday party, yesterday he told me he changed his mind. Instead, he wanted some more of that... READ MORE
