Seeking a Miracle
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Family on Tuesday, March 15, 2011
I teared up reading this one, and resolved to pray as well.
Two-year-old Joseph Whalin, the youngest of seven in a Catholic family, has recently been diagnosed with advanced cancer. From his bed, the toddler has had visions of angels and a visions of what his family believes to be Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.
So they are praying for her intercession for a miracle for their little boy.
Read the whole story here, and join in the prayers if you find yourself so moved.
Prayers for Bishop Steinbock
Posted by Rebecca Teti in News on Friday, December 03, 2010
The bishop of Fresno, John Steinbock, is in critical condition, battling lung cancer.
His essay on Christians and cancer, written to his diocese, is here, and includes this:
“I know people are praying for me. When they tell me this I often simply thank them. For those who are closer and who would understand, I tell them to pray, not that God take away the cancer, but that he gives me the grace to witness all the more to his love and goodness in my life because of the cancer and the suffering He sends me. It’s all part of God’s plan, to be like him, to bear our cross with Jesus, to witness His love, to get to heaven, to be with Him for all eternity.”

Along with many pro-lifers, I was saddened to read recently that researchers at the University of Michigan have created our state’s first embryonic stem cell line. But today I read about a different stem cell development that made me happy.
It can be frustrating to read news articles about stem cell research because it seems like most coverage fails to mention the fact that adult stem cell research... READ MORE

Letters to God

Last week, while the Facebook breast cancer “game” was all the rage, I had the opportunity to see a screening of the new movie Letters to God. It’s honestly one of the most inspirational films I’ve seen in a long time! The film tells the story of a little boy battling a serious form of cancer. As the movie’s website shares, this film is about more than simple entertainment:
Letters to God is... READ MORE

Investigative journalist and Conservative commentator Robert Novak has been a fixture on the Washington scene for more than 40 years. During his long career he’s broken many stories—getting people to “spill” to him with his fabled creed, “You’re either a source or a target.”
This summer Mr. Novak was diagnosed with brain cancer. He writes about how his Catholic faith is helping him and about the outpouring of help and support he’s found—even from his ideological “enemies” in this lovely column, My Brain Tumor.

When Tina Robbins was diagnosed with co lon cancer in the spring of 2006, she didn’t feel afraid or angry. She felt ready to suffer well.
She did not know at that point how very hard it all would be.

Question
I am an oncologist and have many
serious cases of people with poor prospects of survival. I agree that it is wrong to lie to patients, but I prefer not to be completely honest with them because being the bearer of bad news is very emotional and unpleasant for us both to deal with. The news causes my patients to become anxious and to give up hope. It also causes stress to their families and... READ MORE
