Confection Affections

What's going on in your kitchen?

Have you begun your Christmas baking yet?

I have done ... exactly none so far.

This is not like me. I usually enjoy spending my Advent filling my freezer with a beautiful assortment of special cookies and candies for Christmas gifts and entertaining.

But I’m always lecturing other moms about accepting their season in life and I suppose it’s time I took my own advice.

Right now my motherhood seems... READ MORE

Candy Confessions

We haven’t even gone trick or treating yet and already I have eaten a Kit Kat, a small package of Whoppers, and an entire bag of M&Ms.

There now, I feel better.

Any confessions you need to make today?

Chocolate-Covered Delights

What's your candy downfall?

I’ve mentioned before how much I love fruit desserts, but I don’t have a sweet tooth.  I’m much more likely to choose potato chips than cheesecake for an indulgent snack.

Candy, especially, doesn’t usually interest me.  I like the occasional piece of very dark chocolate with dried fruit or nuts, but a plain milk chocolate Hershey bar could sit in my cupboard for a year and I wouldn’t once be tempted... READ MORE

Love, love, love

It will be in the air very soon

I realize this might seem like I’m jumping the gun a bit, talking about Valentine’s Day so soon, but I came across two very clever crafts that I wanted to share. And if you’re like me, sometimes a little advance notice will help you actually get the thing done in time for the holiday.

First, there is this cute idea for making heart-shaped lollipops out of candy canes. It looks very easy and fun.

Next is a website offering a free download for totally cool homemade Valentine’s. Even if you don’t take one of those, it’s a great idea for doing something similar on your own.

Now all that’s left is making reservations at that romantic little Italian place down the street. Or maybe just bookmarking the number of your favorite Chinese restaurant for some takeout.

Chocolate Fudge

the never-fail kind

To me, there’s nothing sadder than a messed up batch of fudge.

You put all kinds of effort into the mixing, measuring, boiling, temperature taking, pouring, and cooling and then what should be a smooth and sinfully rich chocolate delight turns out grainy. Or mushy. Or too sweet. Or not quite sweet enough. It’s off. And it’s sad.

No more! For years now, fudge disappointment has not been a part of my... READ MORE

Peppermint Bark: Round One

Many thanks to those of you who chimed in on my recipe bleg last week. I really appreciated all the suggestions.

This weekend, I made my first batch of Peppermint Bark (EVER, I should add) using a combination of most of the recipes you posted or emailed. In making my recipe selections, my only criteria was that the final product involve chocolate (which is pretty much my rule of thumb in life).

Round... READ MORE

Peanut Brittle

As easy as it is delicious!

Yesterday I made peanut brittle for the first time ever.

I’d always thought of peanut brittle as something you buy in bags at tourist-y little fudge and candy shops.  It’s always overpriced but worth it since it tastes so good.  (I don’t have much of a taste for candy in general, and really don’t enjoy fudge, but the salty-sweet crunch of brittle is addictive to me.)  I’d buy some and enjoy it a couple... Mindless Eating

Make healthy eating a no-brainer for you and your family

Confession: Over the past several days, I’ve eaten a lot—a lot—of Maryjane candies.

I don’t even like Maryjane candies.

My stupidity reminds me of Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think, a fascinating book I read and reviewed a couple of years ago.

The author asserts that when it comes to eating choices, we really are creatures of convenience. Making healthy eating easier and making unhealthy... READ MORE

Chocolate Snobs, Unite!

Is it chocolate ... or mockolate?

It pains me to write this post.

For the good of chocolate lovers everywhere, however, I simply must address this important topic.

It would appear that the makers of many popular chocolate bars and candies, including America’s favorite Hershey’s, have been seeking to cut costs by tinkering with their recipes and changing their products.

They have been replacing expensive cocoa butter with cheaper oils.... READ MORE
