Feast of the Assumption

Father in heaven, all creation rightly gives you praise, for all life and all holiness come from you. In the plan of your wisdom she who bore the Christ in her womb was raised body and soul in glory to be with him in heaven. May we follow her example in reflecting your holiness and join in her hymn of endless love and praise. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Background of the traditional blessing of herbs.
A super yummy rosemary bread recipe to try.
And lots more information and celebration here.

Of Fairies, Shakespeare, and John the Baptist

Daria's Players

Our homeschool group is putting on a one-hour version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream this Saturday, missing by only one day the traditional Midsummer’s Night, which in medieval days was celebrated not on the 21st, but on June 24th, the feast of the birth of St. John the Baptist. Luke 1:26 suggests that John was born six months before Jesus, hence the timing of this feast.

Sometimes called “the summer... READ MORE

Late Lent

Are you living it up?

February will be over next week. Am I the only one who keeps getting thrown off by the fact that it’s not Lent yet?

With Easter almost as late as possible, Lent isn’t starting until March 9th this year. Since it almost always starts in February, this feels strange.

This week, I’ve caught myself a couple times feeling vaguely guilty because I’m not remembering to stick to my Lenten resolutions. I... READ MORE

Commemorating the Visit

Share your Epiphany traditions!

After all the excitement of this Christmas season, Camilla seemed surprised when I told her we would put out shoes for the Wise Men to fill. Yet another treat? Will these thrills never end?

Some people put out shoes on St. Nicholas Day but at my house, growing up, we always left them by the door on the evening of January 5th, the eve of Epiphany. We left lettuce or hay in the shoes for the Magi’s... READ MORE

Corned Beef

Is it what's for dinner?

Just a quick bloggy poll as you take a break from your St. Pat’s Celebrations or preparations: how many of you are making corned beef and cabbage for dinner? Is this your family tradition? Any other good Irish fare on the menu?

In our fair city, St. Patrick’s Day is a huge celebration. There is a parade downtown (though the weather right now isn’t looking too friendly). If it doesn’t rain, we’ll go... READ MORE

Celebrating One!

At the end of Blaise's first year

At 5:26am a year ago today, our little boy was born.

In celebration of his birthday, we had a casual family party this weekend. In honor of being an entire year old, the baby got his very first piece of cake all to himself.

At Camilla’s one-year party, she didn’t quite get the hang of the cake, instead choosing to smear frosting in her hair. Blaise, on the other hand, caught on right away, and was... READ MORE

Ten Questions for 2010

Food for Thought on New Year's Eve

Whatever your plans for today or tonight, the beginning of a New Year invites us to reflect on the past and the future.

I posted these discussion-starting questions last year and decided to re-post them this year. You can use them for personal reflection or family discussion:

1. Did I grow closer to God in the past year? How will I grow closer to God this year?

2. What is one new thing I will pray... READ MORE

Unto Us A Child Is Born

Merry Christmas to you and yours

Isaiah 9: 6

Wonderful!
Counsellor!
The Mighty God!
The Everlasting Father!
The Prince of Peace!

A Christmas Blessing

Lord, in this holy season of prayer and song and laughter, we praise you for the great wonders you have sent us: for shining star and angel’s song, for infant’s cry in lowly manger. We praise you for the Word made flesh in a little Child. We behold his glory, and are bathed in its radiance.

Be with us as we sing the ironies of Christmas, the incomprehensible comprehended, the poetry made hard fact, the helpless Babe who cracks the world asunder. We kneel before you shepherds, innkeepers, wisemen. Help us to rise bigger than we are. Amen.

Deep Breath

finding a minute for yourself

Are you feeling harried yet? A bit frazzled? I’m trying not to, but then I’ll think of everything on my to-do list—a zillion little details that will not make-or-break our celebration but are still a priority—I think of all that and feel a little overwhelmed.

So I’m trying to keep the pace realistic. And I’m trying to work in some “me” time in the midst of all this. I’m not the lady pictured here,... READ MORE
