A New One in the Fold

Our son is baptized!

We’ve got a brand-new Catholic at our house!

Blaise was baptized yesterday afternoon at our parish, along with three other babies.  It was a joyous occasion.  Both sets of the baby’s grandparents and all but one of his aunts and uncles were there, plus his godparents who are some dear friends of ours who live a few states away.

When I was still young enough that all religious ceremonies seemed boring,... READ MORE

Epiphany

What do the Three Kings bring?

Epiphany has always been a big deal in our home.

Growing up, each family member would receive a gift on the Feast of Epiphany to celebrate the gifts the Magi brought baby Jesus. Also on that day, the Three Wise Men from my mom’s Fontanini Nativity would finally arrive at the stable. At the start of Advent, the Magi were set apart and slowly, over the course of the weeks leading up to Epiphany, they... READ MORE

Extending Christmas

How does your family do it?

When I resolved to keep Advent this year I also resolved to celebrate Christmas properly.

Being kind of busy with Advent and not wanting to get ahead of myself, I decided to wait until it was actually Christmas to figure out exactly what “celebrating Christmas properly” should mean.

And now that it is here, I’m kerflummoxed.

Today is the sixth day of Christmas (I am loving Rebecca’s commemoration... READ MORE

Wrapped Up?

How's it goin?

I’m just curious to see where readers are with their shopping and wrapping.

Maybe I just lost a few folks with my curiosity—people who might start hyperventilating at the thought of everything they have left to do.

I don’t really see any reason to panic—we still have all kinds of time before the grand and glorious celebration!

I just thought it would be interesting to see, at this stage of the game,... READ MORE

Golden Boy

Celebrating something big!

Today is my oldest son’s birthday, and as he is turning twelve on November 12th, it is his Golden Birthday.

Happy Birthday, Ethan!

Do you celebrate Golden Birthdays? This has always been a big deal in my family, though I celebrated mine when I was five and I don’t really remember it much. Growing up, I always felt a little sad for my dad. He celebrated his Golden Birthday exactly one year after his... READ MORE

Frying Extravaganza

Making donuts makes me happy

I made donuts this weekend.

Actually, I made donuts twice this weekend, which is certainly a record for me.

Last year my sister and I started a tradition of making homemade cake donuts and caramel apples to honor the coming of fall.

It’s not quite fall yet, but we’re anticipating the season, so we did it on Saturday.  The caramel apples turned out okay, but the donuts were kind of a flop.  I mean,... READ MORE
