All Out For Mother Teresa

The Empire State Building may have declined to honor Mother Teresa on her birthday, but Benedictine College is going all out.

To honor Blessed Mother Teresa’s hundredth birthday, the school will:

  • Christen the brand new Center for Nursing and Health Education after her.
  • Light campus buildings in blue from August 25 to September 5th, to mark the period of time between the anniversary of her birth... READ MORE

A Little Lincoln For The Fourth

Happy Independence Day!

Here’s Abraham Lincoln on the meaning of Independence Day. It’s from a speech given July 10, 1858.
It’s worth reading the whole thing, if only to see how funny Lincoln is, but here’s the part about fourth of July:

Now, it happens that we meet together once every year, sometime about the 4th of July, for some reason or other. These 4th of July gatherings I suppose have their uses. If you will indulge... READ MORE

Fireworks at Home - Yes or No?

Will you use consumer fireworks in your celebration?

Every year around the 4th of July, consumer fireworks stands crop up in our city.  “Safe and Sane” fireworks are legal here, and many families use them as part of their celebrations.  Around our home, my ER husband always has his “doctor” hat on and our use of fireworks is pretty limited.  Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a good sparkler just like anyone else - and we’ve used small legal fireworks many... My Graduate

Congratulations to all of our families who are celebrating!

One day you’re helping them fill their backpacks for the first day of Kindergarten, then in the blink of an eye you’re watching them process in cap and gown to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance

Last weekend was Eric’s moment to shine - after so many years of diligent work, play with friends old and new, and personal growth, he is ready to enter the next phase of life and begin college.  I’ve... READ MORE

O Happy Day!

first solemn professions for a new order of nuns

Rejoice!

11 sisters of the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles professed their perpetual vows earlier this week.

Their diocesan paper describes the scene:

“There were rings, flowers, vows, even a reception with a wedding cake. Only this wedding had twelve brides and each of them were draped in a funeral pall symbolizing their mystical death to the world and to themselves.”

Kansas Catholic was... READ MORE

Our Moms' Special Day

How do we make Mother's Day good for our own mothers?

Since becoming a mother, I tend to think of Mother’s Day as “my” day.

I’m not proud to admit it, but I’ve lost sight of the fact that it’s my mom’s day, too. Not that I’ve completely forgotten to acknowledge it. I’ve just failed to put extra effort into making my own mother’s Mother’s Day something special.

I think of myself as being “in the trenches” of motherhood, while my mom - whose sixth and... READ MORE

Sacramental Lego

a creative way to commemorate the day

I was enchanted by this email from reader Becky Thomson, describing a special Lego project her husband worked on with their son as a gift to William, who is receiving his First Communion this year:

“I just had to tell you what my husband and kindergartener made for the First Holy Communion of our second grader, William. We have three boys (ages 10, 8 and 5) so hardly a day goes by when they aren’t... READ MORE

Bountiful Baskets

What's in your Easter basket?

I’m not sure how the tradition was started, but every year the Easter bunny tends to bring two new boys’ bathing suits with the jelly beans and plastic eggs.  I remember when the suits were small enough to fold into a palm sized square.  Now, they are man-sized, but still a traditional reminder that with Easter comes Spring weather and more time outside.

Different families have different ways of... READ MORE

To Me, It's Not So Super

How do you feel about the all-American sport?

When I was at the grocery store on Monday, there were noticeably higher-than-usual amounts of things like soda and queso dip on sale. It puzzled me at first, but then I remembered that we were kicking off the week of preparation for the big game. The Super Bowl. The most-watched football game of the year.

(Probably. What do I know about it?)

Danielle invited you to post about the food you’re making... READ MORE

Seasonal Sipping

Get cozy with these warm-your-bones drinks

Whether you’re entertaining or just celebrating with family, specialty drinks make any occasion feel like a celebration.

Here, just in time for Christmas and New Year’s, are some of my favorite recipes:

Mom’s Cocoa

In a medium saucepan, combine:

1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
dash of salt
1/3 cup water

Stir well over medium heat until boiling. Boil 2 minutes. Remove from heat and add:

4 cups... READ MORE
