Daily Lenten Meditations

«  March 2010  »

Sun Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat
  • Pray Light a candle. Every time you pass that candle today, offer a prayer of thanks. Don’t ask for anything. Just thank him.
  • Fast Don’t cut corners. Even if no one will know, complete today’s work thoroughly.
  • Give Touch is a powerful thing. Make an effort today to touch your children: a hug, a shoulder rub, a tousled head -- especially the bigger ones
1
  • Pray Make five minutes in the morning, at midday and in the evening to be still, silent, and alone, only asking God to infuse your soul with his will.
  • Fast No noise today. Turn off the TV, the radio, the iPod. Find God in the silence.
  • Give Pay particular unsolicited attention to your least demanding child today.
2
  • Pray Begin a gratitude journal. At the end of the day, jot down five things for which you are grateful. Think upon these things.
  • Fast Remember the first time you had a moment alone with your first child. What did you promise him? Do that. Be that.
  • Give We can only expect what we inspect. For every task you assign today, follow through and before it’s truly finished ensure that there is praise from you.
3
  • Pray “My sheep listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me." -- John 10:27
  • Fast Every time a child interrupts you today, stop what you are doing and look into his eyes as he talks.
  • Give “Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.” -- Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Speak kindly all day long.
4
  • Pray Ask God to show you how weak and small you are. Open your heart to see it.
  • Fast Don’t argue today. As much as possible give up, give in, give way.
  • Give When you are tempted to put on the TV for kids today, pull out a stack of favorite picture books instead. Invite the kids to join you on the couch.
5
  • Pray Take a walk, even if it’s cold or raining. Leave your iPod at home.
  • Fast Think of someone whose life you are tempted to envy and then choke out these words: Thank you, God, for the blessings you have given to X. Help me to see my own.
  • Give Think about the kind of person your husband married. Be that person for him today.
6
7
  • Pray "Love consumes us only in the measure of our self-surrender." -- St. Therese of Lisieux
  • Fast As you go about your daily routine today, remember that you are expecting someone very important for dinner tonight. Together with your children, work towards your husband’s homecoming as if you were expecting to welcome a king back to his castle.
  • Give “You can do nothing with children unless you win their confidence and love by bringing them into touch with oneself, by breaking through all the hindrances that keep them at a distance. We must accommodate ourselves to their tastes, we must make ourselves like them.” -- St. John Bosco
8
  • Pray Take this quote to prayer today and listen to God’s answer: “Real love is demanding. I would fail in my mission if I did not tell you so. Love demands a personal commitment to the will of God.” -- John Paul II
  • Fast Stop looking for encouragement and approval. Genuinely encourage and affirm someone else instead.
  • Give Let your child choose a huge stack of picture books (use that word “huge” when you ask her to gather them). Read them all to her today.
9
  • Pray Persevere. “He who does not give up prayer cannot possibly continue to offend God habitually. Either he will give up prayer, or he will give up sinning.” -- St. Alphonsus Liguori
  • Fast Don’t forget that the only pedestal you need ever stand on, is the one your husband and children build for you.
  • Give Focus on your home today. The world can find another volunteer, but your husband and children have only you.

To Me, It's Not So Super

How do you feel about the all-American sport?

When I was at the grocery store on Monday, there were noticeably higher-than-usual amounts of things like soda and queso dip on sale. It puzzled me at first, but then I remembered that we were kicking off the week of preparation for the big game. The Super Bowl. The most-watched football game of the year.

(Probably. What do I know about it?)

Danielle invited you to post about the food you’re making... READ MORE

Seasonal Sipping

Get cozy with these warm-your-bones drinks

Whether you’re entertaining or just celebrating with family, specialty drinks make any occasion feel like a celebration.

Here, just in time for Christmas and New Year’s, are some of my favorite recipes:

Mom’s Cocoa

In a medium saucepan, combine:

1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
dash of salt
1/3 cup water

Stir well over medium heat until boiling. Boil 2 minutes. Remove from heat and add:

4 cups... READ MORE

Birthday Baking is the Best

Happy Birthday #10 Sweet Juliette!

Hard to believe that ten years ago today, I spent the morning doing my very best not to curse at a well-intentioned nurse who continually offered me a “birthing ball.”

No thank you, Ma’am ... No, really, I don’t want it ... Please, no ... NO BALL! GO AWAY!  NO BALL!

It got pretty ugly.

But birthing ball or no birthing ball, the end result of that labor of love was well worth every bit it cost me.... READ MORE

Only 11 Days Till Advent

just a reminder

Advent is coming! Advent is coming!

Don’t be like me and wait until the Saturday before to start looking for your wreath. Open up that box in the attic right now.

And save yourself the excitement of running all over town looking for purple candles this year. You can order a new set right now, while you are thinking of it. And while you’re at Aquinas and More, definitely check out their Advent page for all the resources you’ll need to make Advent a fruitful season for yourself and your family this year.

Lord of Miracles

Cultural celebrations are wonderful!

I was very happy to see the following video today posted by the Catholic News Agency discussing the history of the “Lord of Miracles” devotion and procession in Peru.  Every year in our parish in Fresno, our Hispanic ministries host a procession in October to celebrate Our Lord of Miracles. I remember attending for the first time a few years ago, and being absolutely blown away by the throngs of people who flocked to our parish to participate in the procession.  The singing, reverent prayers, and true devotion were absolutely amazing.  I hope you enjoy watching this brief video and learning about the devotion.  Does your parish or diocese host similar cultural celebrations that have a special “flair”?

All Dressed Up

with someplace to go

Tonight my husband and I are attending an adult costume party in honor of a friend’s birthday. I have been excited about this for weeks.

Growing up, I celebrated Halloween exactly one time. I went as Wonder Woman and the evening involved a traumatic event that included me feeling like I was suffocating in the plastic mask (these were the late 70s after all). After that, our family began celebrating... READ MORE

Firework Frenzy

How do you feel about them?

Happy Canada Day!

I practically grew up in Canada.  My childhood home is less than a mile from the Canadian border.

Our wedding reception was held on the sixth floor of a building near the river that separates the US and Canada, and my younger brothers had fun proving to their disbelieving cousins that the buildings on the other side of the river actually were in a completely different country. ... READ MORE

School’s Out!

http://quakeragitator.wordpress.com/2008/06/17/schools-out/

Today marked the close of the school year for St.Jerome’s Catholic School.

Finally!  It’s hard to say who wishes harder for school to let out around here: me or my kids.

We always celebrate the accomplishments of the school year with some kind of treat. Sometimes it’s a stop at an ice cream parlor. Tonight it’s a pizza dinner and later we’ll take in a movie with some school chums.

There are even rumors that the now-liberated child chefs will be making french toast for breakfast tomorrow.

I guess I should go buy bread?

Do you do anything special to mark the end of an academic year? Or is just plopping into the sofa with an iced tea celebration enough?

Double Dose of Birthday

Happy Birthday Rebecca!

I hope you all didn’t get too filled up on Rachel’s birthday cupcakes last Friday, because we aren’t done with the fun here yet.

Today just so happens to be Rebecca’s birthday ... and mine too!

Rebecca, we are so blessed to have you as part of our blogging family here at Faith and Family Live.

Your generous sharing of your intellect and wit, all with a healthy dose of humility and practicality, inspire all of us to serve our families and communities with greater passion and grow closer to Christ.

God bless you today and every day—It’s an honor to be turning 29 with you again this year!

(P.S. Guess what else? Lisa’s birthday is in a week!)

Party for a Princess

Happy Birthday Gabby!

Rachel is not the only sweetie-pie celebrating a birthday today.

Our own Princess Gabrielle is turning six.

Now this is my child with the most ... complicated needs. For weeks now, she’s been keeping a running verbal list of all the things that she anticipates enjoying on her birthday.

A butterfly cake covered with M&Ms, balloons, flowers, doughnuts, ballet slippers, princess fairy wings, lip gloss,... READ MORE
