Win the Day!

I make it through a tough week

One of my biggest vices is sloth, frustrated perfectionist style.

I tend to set the bar low for myself.  When a task comes along that is outside my comfort zone, I balk.  When it’s something I have no choice about, I panic.

But this is why parenthood is so good for me.  Those difficult tasks come along, and when I’m done balking and panicking, the tasks are still there.  I’m the only person who can... READ MORE

A Week to Be Grateful

Coping with traveling Daddy

For weeks, I’ve been dreading the end of June.

My husband left Saturday for a week-long business trip.  It’s the longest he’s gone on since we’ve been married, and the most number of nights in a row he’s ever spent away from Camilla.

We love Daddy, and as you can imagine, we’re not happy that he’s gone.

Luckily for me, my parents live just ninety miles from us.  On Saturday I packed up the kids and... READ MORE

Pray Unceasingly

A timely reminder

This evening was not fun.

My husband found out in mid-afternoon that he was going to have to work late.  He ended up not leaving the office until more than three hours after his usual time.

The toddler pulled a torch lamp over into a bookshelf, shattering its globe and sending glass shards everywhere.

The baby refused to go to sleep for most of the evening, and by the time he finally crashed out he... READ MORE

Travel Challenges

Funny in the future

When I was a kid, my parents would pack us children and all the stuff we needed for ten days into the car and drive thirteen hours to visit my grandparents.  It makes me tired just thinking about it.  All the kids!  All the stuff!  Sometimes we even drove overnight!

A couple years ago, Bryan and I had one small six-month-old and the prospect of packing and traveling for the three of us to take a weekend... READ MORE

New-Baby Craziness

Struggling through the fourth trimester

Our little Blaise was six weeks old on Monday, which means we are close to half-done with his first three months.

During my first pregnancy I polled my blog readers for advice about what to expect with a new baby, and I’ve never forgotten one response.  A mom said that she is always thrilled to have another baby, but dreads the time right after he is born.  “I really hate those first three months,”... Finding Five

When gratefulness doesn't come easily

I’ve heard from more than one person that it’s risky to pray to God for patience, because He will give you more opportunities to develop it, and generally these opportunities are not things you would have wished upon yourself.

Two days after I wrote it, I’m feeling a bit rueful about my post on Monday where I talked about making a resolution to ask God to help me rejoice in all circumstances, including... READ MORE

Cleaning, Baby!

The challenge with kids

Life with one toddler and one in utero baby is many things by its nature.  Fast-paced is not one of them.

My sister had her second child in July, and watching her deal with two kids has made me realize: I have a limited amount of time during which my life is going to be as simple as it is now.  I should take advantage of it.

During the first months of my pregnancy I took advantage of it by spending... READ MORE

Not Always Easy

The ups and downs of parenting

We now have a two-year-old at our house.  I’m trying to focus on the positive by, among other things, rejecting the term “Terrible Twos.”

I like far better the term “Terrific Twos” which Danielle mentioned last week.  Bryan and I waited and prayed a long time for our daughter, and the chance to parent her is always a privilege, no matter how much of a challenge it also happens to be.

This is not to... READ MORE
