Faith & Family In Transition

Good news! Faith & Family magazine and Faith & Family Live are in transition to a new home—one that will provide us with the support and financial stability we need to continue our ministry to Catholic families.

I am not going anywhere and there will be no lapse of service to current magazine subscribers, but for a brief period some of you might experience difficulty purchasing or renewing subscriptions to the magazine.

We are working hard to get all the details hammered out for a smooth transition and I will announce more details as soon as I am able. I am looking forward to a bright future for Faith & Family. Please pray for us as we make these changes!

Oh Christmas Tree!

Tell me about yours

Yesterday we picked out our Christmas tree and for the first time in years, we tried something new.

Since our first Christmas, Paul and I have always had a real tree. Our first few years of marriage, we opted for a pine tree (grown local and thus a lot cheaper). After a while we decided to spring for a Fraser Fir, to me the quintessential Christmas tree. Fraser Firs look great, smell great and are... READ MORE

Family Changes and Feelings

Join us for this week's podcast!

This week on the podcast (click here to listen or click on the player above), Rachel, Elizabeth and I discuss recent changes in our homes.  As Elizabeth and I both watch children move out of the “nest” and into exciting new phases of life, we chat about how moms deal with the emotions related to these types of changes.  When you have times of emotion in your life, do you hide your true feelings from... Loving Them Both

How do we do it?

We went to my brother’s high school graduation, and there was a pregnant girl in his class.

She must have been close to full-term, because even though she was capped and gowned, you couldn’t miss the reality of her condition.

My sister elbowed me as we watched her walk across the stage. “Look at that. Good for her!”

I agreed. A part of me wanted to find the girl after the ceremony and tell her how... READ MORE

Time for Change

This hurts!

I am compelled to comment on the time change, which has thrown a miniature wrench into our daily schedule. It’s not a standard-size wrench, mind you, but a wrench just big enough to cause slight upheaval and make our mornings rushed and a wee bit painful.

I know this too shall pass—before I know it, we will all be used to the new time, the lost hour and getting up earlier than before. Our bodies will... READ MORE

Wii Caved

Says you: how has your parenting changed?

Video games have always been verboten in our house.

We don’t think they’re inherently evil, but we do think they’re addictive, and have always wanted our kids to develop the inner resources to occupy themselves rather than needing to be entertained.

I’d rather my kids think first of reading, playing music, creating with blocks or art supplies, sports or board games rather than have anything involving... READ MORE

The Gift of an Ordinary Day

words of wisdom from author Katrina Kenison

I am a big fan of Katrina Kenison. I have posted before about her book Mitten Strings for God, and I am eagerly awaiting my sister’s copy of her latest book, The Gift of an Ordinary Day.

Here’s a video clip of her reading a passage from her second book, about the changes from busy early mothering years, to adolescence, and beyond ... I dare you not to cry.

Resolved, or Still Working On It?

Looking at the year ahead

To be quite honest with you, even though we’ve rung in the New Year—and I did so in style this year—I have some work to do on anticipating the 365 days that stretch out before us.  I love to make and revisit my New Year’s resolutions every year, but somehow this year’s big day seems to have crept up on me!

I found Joseph Pronechen’s featured article today on resolutions to be a tremendous source of... READ MORE
