When I was a kid we didn’t have a television, and my five younger siblings and I loved to read. Our favorite night of the month was Library Night, when our parents would take us to the library and we’d check out a big pile of books. We thought it was cruel of them to limit us to eight books each, but 6x8=48, which is a lot, so I guess they were justified. Anyway, we were voracious readers.

Need Your Book Recommendations

This morning, I received an email from a wonderful woman who is seeking to help a special girl in her life. The young girl in question is a recent First Communicant who is experiencing some spiritual difficulty. Along with advising her to seek counseling from both her pastor and her pediatrician, I would like to recommend some age appropriate books for this little girl. So I am turning to you -... READ MORE

Whenever I travel, I love to visit local area churches, cathedrals and shrines. My parents passed along this gift to their five children - many of our family vacations growing up were camping trips to the various California missions. So now, when I travel, I always make time for at least one new church experience. Instead of collecting postcards or magnets, I have a collection of photos of Mary... READ MORE

Congratulations to editor Jennifer Gladen and all of the authors and illustrators involved in the release of the debut issue of My Light Magazine, an online magazine for Catholic children. The magazine is available online free of charge and features poetry, non-fiction articles and fun short stories. In this month’s issue you can even find easy instructions for making your own Rosary. The magazine looks to be another great resource to help our kids learn more about our faith while having fun and exploring! The Work of Discipline

Yesterday, Camilla and I did not have an easy morning. I was struggling with more nausea than usual, and Milla decided to do her part to contribute to the household happiness quotient by not listening to a single thing I said. She’d throw something on the floor, I’d tell her to pick it up, and she’d turn away or run into another room to show me how dedicated she was to ignoring me. After a few... READ MORE

When my three oldest boys were little, we lived in a townhouse with a postage-stamp-sized yard.
But this little house was set on the edge of Pohick Valley Stream Park, acres and acres of wooded parkland with a meandering creek running down the middle... READ MORE
The Joy of Being ‘Auntie’

Dear Patrick,
I’m on the train back home to Fresno after having spent the past day with you and am missing you like crazy already. I wanted to thank you for the joy of being your Auntie – you are a precious gift from God and I’m blessed every time I am able to spend time with you. The following are just a few of my favorite things about being your Auntie Lisa:
• Arriving on the train with a... READ MORE

Lisa’s post about her son hitting a milestone has me pondering the rapidity with which children grow up. It’s a cliche, I know, but when our daughter Camilla was a newborn, so fussy that every week felt like it had at least twelve days and twelve endless nights in it, we had trouble with the idea that children grow up fast. One time when we were in the middle of a many-hour cry-fest, my husband... READ MORE
Serving with a Smile

Earlier this week, my 8th grade son Adam attended part one of his annual two part Altar Server Training. On a blazing hot Fresno afternoon, after seven hours of sitting in a classroom and longing for a break, Adam and multiple serving colleagues met with our Coordinator to be briefed on the latest nuances in their duties in serving at the Lord’s altar.
I feel blessed beyond measure that both of... READ MORE
Labor Day Special

When I was a kid I didn’t see my extended family much. My mother’s parents and only brother lived five hundred miles away, and my dad’s many siblings and their children were scattered all over the country. We did visit sometimes, usually in the summer, but on holidays it was always just us: my parents, my five younger siblings, and me. It was fun, it was just relatively small.
A decade later,... READ MORE
