Dorm Life

Today was the official move in day for Eric, his first “real” day of college life following five days of pre-orientation. First thing this morning we met Eric’s new roommate, Nathan, and his amazing family. The rest of the day was spent setting up their room, making numerous trips to the CVS for forgotten supplies (thank goodness it’s a close walk!), meeting new friends and doing other “set up”... Baby Out or Baby In?

My sister is pregnant. Fully pregnant, since she was due this past Saturday.
Her first baby was a month early and her second eight days late. With this third baby, she was hoping to go early again, but no dice. She seems resigned to her baby’s late-ish arrival, but I know she’s greeting each morning wishing it will be the day.
I have no experience with this, since my babies were born at 10 days and... READ MORE
Family Changes and Feelings
Posted by Lisa Hendey in News on Thursday, August 19, 2010
This week on the podcast (click here to listen or click on the player above), Rachel, Elizabeth and I discuss recent changes in our homes. As Elizabeth and I both watch children move out of the “nest” and into exciting new phases of life, we chat about how moms deal with the emotions related to these types of changes. When you have times of emotion in your life, do you hide your true feelings from... READ MORE
To Be a Good Fledgling

As Lisa writes about sending her son to college, my parents are getting ready to send a kid away to school too.
Except it’s not their first, it’s their last.
My youngest brother, Kelson, leaves at the end of the month to start his freshman year of college in Florida. All of the rest of us have been gone for a while (in my case, a very long while). Mom and Dad are going to be empty-nesters.
Now, my... READ MORE
One Advances, One Retreats

Blaise will be 19 months old on Thursday, but when he was just 18 months, I was worried a mental breakdown might keep me from making it to this point.
Has anyone else gone through this? Dealing with an 18-month-old who makes you think you’ll lose your mind?
I don’t remember this with my daughter, but when Blaise hit 18 months it was like someone flipped a switch. A BAD switch. His already not-stellar... READ MORE
Three, Two… Seven?

My daily life—and, I suspect, the lives of many other families with toddlers—involves a lot of counting. Three songs before bedtime; twelve grapes for a snack; five seconds to calm down from throwing a fit.
Blaise is too young to “get” numbers, but Camilla likes them. The framework of numbers for treats and discipline works well for her because she can understand it.
She also enjoys counting for... READ MORE
Good/Hard

Every once in a while I go through the archives of my personal blog and look at the pictures of my daughter as an infant, read the words that I wrote about her during those early months. It’s good for me.
We had fertility struggles before Camilla, and once she came along I was overwhelmed by how grateful I was for her. Also by how hard parenting was, of course, but foremost I was aware of how much... READ MORE
Leaving Comfort

Last fall when my daughter was starting Atrium at our parish, I blogged about it, and we had a good conversation in the comments about kids being away from their parents for the first time.
What ended up happening with Atrium was that - fortunately - it wasn’t necessary for me to leave Camilla there. I stayed in the classroom with her, and by spring she was willing to let me bring a book and sit in... READ MORE
A Happy Bargain

My husband called this afternoon and told me that he was going to come home from work early, trade his car for my bigger one, and go out and pick up a surprise.
“A surprise?” I asked, thinking quickly about what large items could be exciting for me.
But the surprise wasn’t for me, he told me. It was for Camilla.
Ah! That explained his gleeful tone - my husband loves to delight his little girl.
Camilla... READ MORE
Singing to Sleep
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Family on Thursday, July 15, 2010
When I was first married and thought of my future children, one of the things I most looked forward to was singing them lullabies.
We didn’t have Michael Card’s album Sleep Sound in Jesus until I was in high school, so I don’t have memories of hearing the songs on it when I was a small child. But once we got the album, even though I was far too old for my mother to sing me to sleep any more, I promptly... READ MORE
