Him: Out, Me: In

My husband is an outdoorsy person. I am not. When we were in college, he spent an entire summer in New Mexico working as a ranger at Philmont, an intensive hiking camp for Boy Scouts. He would call me up and tell me, “I haven’t showered in five days!” and I would shudder with disgust. He did admit that the every-five-days showering was a little bit gross, but Bryan loved everything about his summer... READ MORE
Bowling Lessons

Babies are easily amused, which is useful. At Mass last week, I amused Blaise for half an hour with a tube of lip balm and an errant sock I found in the diaper bag. Put the tube in the sock, then dump it out… he was mesmerized.
The downside to this is that while it can be fun to take babies on outings, it often feels a bit pointless. Yes, we could pack up the baby and spend the day doing something... READ MORE
Dental Adventure

Today was a big day for our three-year-old: her very first dentist appointment.
I was not expecting it to go well. That is putting it mildly. Camilla is cautious and does not like to try new things. I’ve seen her upset to the point of throwing up at the prospect of having her hair washed. By her own mother. In her own home.
She was at the dentist with my husband and me for our last cleaning six months... READ MORE
Working Through Conflict

Q: My husband and I disagree about child discipline. I grew up in a very strict home and don’t ever want to be that way with our kids. I think my husband is too severe sometimes, but when I suggest he ease up a bit, he gets very angry with me. He thinks I let the kids get away with too much. How should we handle this disagreement?
A: Why does God allow spouses to disagree, even strongly, about such... READ MORE
Kids and the Big Questions

My daughter loves to look at our wedding pictures, at Mama and Daddy all dressed up. She likes to talk about our wedding, too, and I tell her all the details she wants.
She did surprise me one day, though. “Mama, remember when you and Daddy got married? And I was there?”
“Sweetheart, you weren’t.”
(In a sense she was, but I don’t think “twinkle in your father’s eye” is a concept she’s ready for yet.)... READ MORE
Be Fruitful, Multiply

From the New York Times comes the story of Yitta Schwartz who died last month leaving nearly 2,000 living descendants—including 15 children, over 200 grandchildren and too many great- and great-great grands to count.
There were so many occasions that, to avoid scheduling conflicts, one of her sons was assigned to keep a family calendar. But her family insists that Mrs. Schwartz had no trouble remembering everyone’s name and face.
What a wonderful, beautiful legacy!
Stations of the Cross for Kids

The Stations of the Cross are a lovely devotion, and they’re especially appropriate on Fridays in Lent. Many parishes celebrate them on Friday evenings during the season of penance, but it can be difficult to attend with children. Repeatedly standing and kneeling while corralling children and keeping them from disturbing others is enough of a challenge. Trying also to concentrate on the prayers becomes... READ MORE
Patrick Kennedy Retires
Posted by Rebecca Teti in News on Friday, February 12, 2010
Rep. Patrick Kennedy of Rhode Island announced his retirement yesterday.
He was last in the news for a public tiff with his bishop over his support for abortion and receiving communion.
Even as that debate was going on, however, Kennedy, having just lost his father, was re-thinking his life.
I think you’ll find this “exit interview” with the Boston Herald touching.
It’s a good reminder that grace is always at work, and our political opponents—even when they are emphatically in the wrong, for example on the abortion question—may be closer than we know to conversion.
I can say in my own life that I was never more emphatically “Protestant” than when I was closest to conversion, but not yet ready to admit it to myself or anyone else.
I pray for Patrick Kennedy, and I hope he finds what he is looking for.
Talk About It

I have noticed a trend among newer preschool television shows that involves one or more of the characters having a speech impediment. Have you noticed this?
I’m curious about this phenomenon, mostly wondering about the reasoning behind it. Does this kind of talking sound more appealing to younger ears? Is it to make a child who has a speech issue feel more at ease about it? Maybe it’s to show that... READ MORE
Peek-a-Baby
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Family on Wednesday, February 10, 2010
Dinner was nearly over, but Bryan and I were still finishing our food. Our hopping up multiple times during a meal to refill a milk cup or grab a napkin means that our kids often finish eating before we do, and tonight was no exception. Camilla had already been excused. The baby decided the remaining chunks of shrimp and pasta on his tray held no interest for him. He started grumping.
I could have... READ MORE
