Pope Benedict XVI on Children and Prayer

A lovely message

This weekend, received a link to Pope Benedict XVI’s wonderful address on prayer to the children of St. Rita’s Parish in Benin. While the entire address is magnificent and well worth reading, I thought I’d share a portion here that really inspired me:

Some of you have already made your First Holy Communion, and others are preparing for it. The day of my First Holy Communion was one of the most beautiful... READ MORE

Changing Lanes

School Choices - the third in a series

As we’ve started kindergarten with our oldest child this year, I’ve blogged twice already about our decision-making process: “When to Begin” and “Where It Happens.” Since we’ve had some new developments recently, I thought I’d continue the series.

From the introduction to the previous posts:

This is a sporadic series, not meant to defend or criticize any particular schooling decision. Rather, I want... READ MORE

Another Duggar Baby

Twenty babies!

No doubt you’ve heard the latest announcement from the Duggar’s: baby number 20 is on the way!

I saw snide comments all over my twitter feed yesterday and felt compelled to write something positive about this situation.

While Paul and I are not called to have 20 children, it seems to me (based on zero first-hand knowledge of course but on watching the show here and there) that the Duggar’s are handling... READ MORE

Crazy Sock Day

...and other things that drive moms crazy

A working mom in my life (whose husband is—by the way—a stay at home dad) called me yesterday in a bit of a frenzy. She was headed out to find “crazy socks” for today’s “crazy sock day” that is a part of the Red Ribbon Week at her children’s Catholic school. I told her to stay in her car, drive home, and look through her own sock drawer. A few suggestions I offered were to find mismatched Christmas... READ MORE

You're Great, They're Awful

How do you handle negative-positive attention?

I step up to the cutting counter at the fabric store. My sister’s with me, but she’s grabbing some stuff while I corral our four big kids, aged two, three, five, and five.

The staffer unfolds the first of my bolts and the children are all over the place. I think Camilla’s about to grab the scissors and try to cut the fabric herself. “Everyone please put one hand on the cart,” I tell them, and they... READ MORE

Silly Kid-isms

what have your children mis-said?

Last night our two-year-old had a small meltdown, which is not unusual. He yelled “I don’ wan’ dat! I don’ wan’ dat!” over and over.

I ignored him (these things pass quickly) and then was suddenly sad when I realized what he was saying.

Blaise caught on to things like pronouns surprisingly early (unlike Camilla, who went around for months asking, “Pick you up?”) but has had trouble with negative syntax.... READ MORE

So Simple, So Helpful

Share your simple solutions!

My mom came and helped for a couple weeks after the twins were born. She was great (as always) but one of the best things she did was give me an idea on her way out.

While here, Mom took over one of my smaller-but-no-less-annoying-for-being-small daily tasks: pouring cups of milk, juice, and water for my children. Camilla and Blaise are thirsty kiddos. I was not looking forward to taking this task... READ MORE

Where It Happens

School Choices - the second in a series!

Last spring I blogged about how we’d decided to start school with Camilla this fall. It was supposed to be the first in a series, but things got crazy after that and I dropped the ball. But I still think the series is worthwhile, so here we are: School Choices, Part 2.

Here’s the introduction:
One of my favorite things about writing on the Internet is sharing experiences and learning from others who... READ MORE

Encouraging Strangers

taking a chance

I grabbed lunch with my sister today and walking to our table I passed the sweetest little family.

They were seated at a long table. Mom and Dad sat across from the children—a row of four toddlers who all looked like they were three. I couldn’t help myself, I had to inquire.

“Are they quadruplets,” I asked, being totally nosey but also quite smitten. There they sat, this row of identical looking cherubs,... READ MORE

Are Tiny Pageant Queens Too Young to Dream?

How young is "too young" for the pageant circuit?

Last week, I had an interesting email from a concerned parent who is having a disagreement with their spouse over the participation of their child in the childhood pageant circuit. In hopes of protecting the family’s identity, I don’t want to go into any of the details on who’s in favor of turning the kiddo into a queen—suffice it to say that one parents ardently supports the plan and the other adamantly...
