Homemade Hot Cocoa

When the Swiss Miss won't do

All this cold weather has me thinking about two of my favorite things: being warm and chocolate.

Enter this homemade hot cocoa recipe I came across. It looks delicious. Don’t you think homemade cocoa blows the store bought stuff out of the (icy cold) water?

From the Hershey’s Website:
Hot Cocoa

Ingredients
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup HERSHEY’S Cocoa
Dash salt
1/3 cup hot water
4 cups (1 qt.) milk
3/4... READ MORE

Valentine's Day Is Good for Your Health

Here’s a bit of good news, just in time for the holiday this weekend:

Chocolate Lowers Risk of Stroke

A new review of recent research on chocolate and stroke risk found at least two large studies are suggestive of the health benefits of chocolate in lowering the risk of stroke. The results will be presented in April at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology in Toronto. The first study... READ MORE

Chocolate Monks

have you thanked a Cistercian today?

From the monastery of Piedra, a little history.

“a Cistercian monk who travelled with Hernán Cortés to Mexico, Brother Jeronimo of Aguilar, sent the first cocoa beans ever seen in Europe to the Abbot at Monasterio de Piedra, Antonio de Alvaro, together with a recipe for chocolate.
The monks at this monastery were therefore the first people in Europe to taste this delicacy, explaining the long tradition... READ MORE

Yum Without the Yuck

Pasteurized eggs save the French Silk Pie

Juliette is my resident baker. She likes goodies of all kinds and bakes regularly (Hmmm, where does she get that?).

Yesterday, she asked if she could try a pie. And her chocolate-loving Mama suggested she try a French Silk chocolate pie.  I have fond memories of baking these delicious desserts years ago with college roommates.

When I looked up the recipes, though, I was surprised to find that pretty... READ MORE

Working hard to bring you Faith & Family magazine

It is “closing week” at Faith & Family. We are finishing up the last bits of the November/December issue before we ship it off to the printer. Danielle Bean traveled from New Hampshire and associate editor, Lynn Wehner, came into the office to help with all the last minute details.

Here we are hard at work (don’t we look cute?), up to our elbows in story ideas, page layouts, proofs ... and chocolate... READ MORE

Chocolate-Covered Delights

What's your candy downfall?

I’ve mentioned before how much I love fruit desserts, but I don’t have a sweet tooth.  I’m much more likely to choose potato chips than cheesecake for an indulgent snack.

Candy, especially, doesn’t usually interest me.  I like the occasional piece of very dark chocolate with dried fruit or nuts, but a plain milk chocolate Hershey bar could sit in my cupboard for a year and I wouldn’t once be tempted... READ MORE

Bake Your Way to Popularity

Chocolate chip muffins are a quick and easy treat

A couple of days ago, Juliette made a batch of banana bread.

As often happens with fresh baked goods aound here, the bread disappeared. Quickly. So quickly, in fact, that 7-year-old Stephen didn’t have any.

When he voiced his dismay, my heart went out to him. We baked goods lovers know the pain of this kind of disappointment.

“Tomorrow,” I promised him, “You and I will bake something yummy together.”... READ MORE

Love It!

Now this I can handle

I came across this clever little dessert that I wanted to share—chocolate-dipped marshmallows that look like they will be delicious. What’s really nice about this recipe is that it looks like something I can actually pull together with zero effort.

(Between you and me, my plans for tomorrow night’s dessert include Paul buying something, smothered in chocolate, from the gourmet grocery store’s bakery.)

SO! Chocolate-dipped mallows I can do, maybe even for breakfast. And while we’re on the subject of clever, tasty treats, check out Elizabeth Foss’ suggestion right here.

(I’ve noticed all my posts of late have been about Valentine’s Day. What can I say? I’m a sucker for love. Also, I’m trying to get an award for most love-oriented posts in a single week.)
