King's Christian Legacy

Last evening as I was preparing dinner, I caught a nice interview on public radio with one Lewis Baldwin.

He’s written a new book,Never to Leave Us Alone: The Prayer Life of Martin Luther King Jr.

I haven’t read the book to recommend it, but was pleased to hear him quote extensively from some of King’s prayers during the interview. He spoke too of how profoundly King’s courage in commitment to... READ MORE

Yoga and Christianity

Do they mix?

Southern Baptist Seminary President Albert Mohler is making waves with his recent comments that Christians should not practice yoga. In a piece he wrote for his website, Mohler said the practice of yoga is at odds with Christianity.

“Christians are not called to empty the mind or to see the human body as a means of connecting to and coming to know the divine,” he wrote.

I’ll admit I have not done... READ MORE

"Charity is Hard and Endures"

A wise answer to discontent with Christianity

In response to Anne Rice’s well-publicized resolve to “quit” Christianity, Rod Dreher quotes a letter by Flannery O’Connor.

Like all of O’Connor’s writing, it is well worth reading. And considering the current scandals going on the in the Church, I think it’s very applicable today.

Here’s my favorite thought from the letter:

“You don’t serve God by saying: the Church is ineffective, I’ll have none of it. Your pain at its lack of effectiveness is a sign of your nearness to God. We help overcome this lack of effectiveness simply by suffering on account of it.”

But you should read the whole article.

Come To Jesus, Tiger

Says You: is it ever inappropriate to evangelize?

I’m curious to know this community’s reaction to Fox News analyst Brit Hume’s call for Tiger Woods to convert to Christianity.

As you can imagine, it didn’t really go over well among the chattering classes—even the “conservative” chattering classes.

After looking at the clip, I find I’m of two minds.

I very much admire Hume for two things: for taking what appears to be a somewhat crass discussion... READ MORE

Kindness Is The Best Surprise

...but it's not random
fra angelico

I love Christianity!

Let me explain what’s got me exulting in this Pollyanna fashion.

A person I’ve never met did the nicest thing for me yesterday. I’ll keep him anonymous so as not to embarrass him, especially without his permission, but it involves an author and blogger I’m sure at least some of you would recognize.

About a year ago this gentleman posted a request for prayers for a priest friend... READ MORE

Christianity Is Not For Wimps

Christ came to set fire to the earth

Do you think perhaps God is trying to tell me something?

Here are some stirring quotations that caught my eye in my Google Reader this week. Do you sense a theme?

The first comes from an address Archbishop Chaput gave in Toronto on Monday about the Catholic political vocation. I commend the whole speech to you, but for purposes of this post I’m only going to cite an excerpt he read from a George... READ MORE

Christian Fiction

What does it mean, and how do you find it?

Earlier this week I re-read some of G.K. Chesterton’s Father Brown mysteries (specifically the ones in this collection) and greatly enjoyed the intellectual stimulation of the brilliant plotting and Chesterton’s famous wit.

When I’d finished those, I picked up Prince Caspian for old time’s sake, and lost myself for a few hours in the lovely adventures of the Pevensie children and their Narnian friends... READ MORE
