Giving Christmas
Posted by Arwen Mosher in News on Friday, December 16, 2011
Did you see this? In stores across the country, mostly Kmarts, donors are paying off layaway accounts for complete strangers.
Read the whole story here, and if you don’t tear up while you do… well, you’re more stoic than I am.
What a lovely way to help someone at Christmas!
Doing Christmas

Today I followed a link someone had described as the year’s “Most Judgemental and Condescending Holiday Post,” expecting something horrifying, and instead got this post at a Jewish parenting site called Kveller: “Actually, You Can’t Celebrate Hanukkah AND Christmas.”
I found it neither judgemental nor condescending. As someone who’s always interested in reading perspectives from people of other religions,... READ MORE
The Gift Dilemma

Our kids have too many toys.
If I were writing this on Twitter, I’d wryly label it #firstworldproblems, but the good fortune of our situation does not change the spreading-all-over-the-house, making-Mama-crazy aspect of it. There are too many toys.
Recent ruthless culling has returned our playroom to a manageable state, with a few age-inappropriate things stored and many many items sent to the donation... READ MORE
The Gift of Giving
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Family on Tuesday, December 06, 2011
As evidenced by my late posting today, it’s been a doozy. I think when I designed this day in my head, I must have been either delusional, or distracted—or likely both!
Regardless, one of the “to do” items for my Feast of St. Nicholas agenda was to deliver our “Project Santa Giving Tree” donations to Church. Every year, our parish works in conjunction with the local Women’s shelter run by the Holy... READ MORE
Christmas Card Mania
Posted by Rachel Balducci in Family on Wednesday, November 30, 2011
This is my favorite Balducci Christmas card photo ever. It’s from a few years ago, and it perfectly encapsulates life in our home during that season.
In the years since, we’ve had some nice photos—along with one tremendous dud that involved me feeling desperate for a decent photo and using the one from the parish directory (complete with blue shag carpet across my lap as I held baby Henry).
The last... READ MORE
Black Thursday?

Rachel’s lovely article today has me thinking about my holiday shopping, so when I ran across this article at USA Today, I was greatly disturbed. It seems that some of our major retailers, including Target, Walmart and Toys R Us, have decided to continue their encroachment into the family holiday by opening during the nighttime hours of Thanksgiving.
Target spokeswoman Molly Snyder says the decision... READ MORE
Making a List

While I’m sure there are those who have finished their Christmas shopping (go you! You’re awesome), I am not one of those people.
I thought it might be nice for the mere mortals among us to share ideas on toys that stand the test of time, in case we’ve got some more shopping to do.
Today: toys for boys!
Here’s my list of a few items that are worth buying, things that last and get used and enjoyed... READ MORE
Christmas in August?
Posted by Danielle Bean in News on Friday, August 19, 2011
Faith & Family senior writer Lori Hadacek Chaplin is working on our annual Christmas gift guide, and she would like your input.
I would like to include a section in my Christmas Gift Guide article which includes suggestions from FF readers about gift ideas which cost nothing or only a few dollars. I don’t want my guide to seems too materialistic, and I am hoping that someone will have some interesting ideas beyond baking Christmas cookies as gifts.
Please leave your inexpensive Christmas gift ideas in the comments!
Christmas Storing

Now that we’re back into Ordinary Time, it’s confession time.
Here’s mine: although December 25th was almost three weeks ago, we STILL have Christmas presents sitting in boxes in our living room.
I know!
I’d love to claim the stress of pregnancy as the reason for my disorganization, but I can’t lie. It’s like this every year. In fact, before we had kids, we were even worse at putting away the gifts.... READ MORE
Lights Out
Posted by Rachel Balducci in Family on Wednesday, January 05, 2011
For the second Christmas in a row, we had a light incident on our tree.
Last year, the week before Christmas, the middle section of my Christmas tree went completely dark. For several days I had an interior struggle about if and how I should handle this problem (in our home, Christmas tree lights fall under my jurisdiction). I stared at the tree, then tried to will the lights back on, and when that... READ MORE
