Being Bold

How do you take advantage of opportunities to reach out?

Last weekend, I witnessed an amazing display of evangelization in action.

Greg, Eric and I were each spending time in our own favorite corners of Barnes and Noble.  I was standing in front of the parenting section, looking at books about raising teens.  Next to me stood a lovely young couple who were deeply engrossed in a book about breastfeeding.  The wife was very pregnant, looking ready at any... At Peace?

An odd interaction at Mass

Last Sunday, I had a terribly strange, terribly unnerving experience during Mass. When it was time to offer peace to those around us, the gentleman in front of my family would not offer me peace.

To set the scene: Paul was with two of the boys in the back of the church, and our oldest son was serving the altar. That left me and our two other boys sitting together.

We attend the early Mass each week,... READ MORE

Here We Go Again

Look who's questioning settled Science

Democratic Vice Presidential nominee Joseph Biden appeared on Meet the Press yesterday, where host Tom Brokaw revisited the question of when life begins.

It was just last week that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi provoked the USCCB and some 26 individual bishops into publicly correcting a gross misstatement of Catholic teaching in the same forum.

Senator Biden, whose voting record on life issues is nominally... READ MORE

Family Life Ministry

How can the Church support you in living out your faith as a Catholic family?

This morning, I was blessed to have a one to one meeting with the new Family Life Coordinator for my home diocese, the Diocese of Fresno.

Andy is new to his job, an energetic young man who is a fairly recent graduate of the Franciscan University of Steubenville.  He invited me to his office for a “get acquainted” meeting to share ideas and brainstorm.  Andy is occupying a position which has been vacant... READ MORE

Catholic Coffeehouse Dwellers

Catholic culture thrives among the young at college coffee houses

St. Killian’s, Christendom

Kaylie Miller

When she was 15 years old, Kaylie Miller made a promise to herself: She would not attend a Catholic college. But her resolve faded when she visited the campus of Christendom College in Front Royal, Va.

“I fell in love with the place,” recalls Kaylie, now 24. “I had a meeting with Dr. [Timothy] O’Donnell, president of the college, and he half-jokingly... READ MORE

Freedom From the Old Ball & Chain

The equal dignity of each human person is the internal logic of heterosexual, monogamous marriage.

By Rebecca Ryskind Teti

Most of us practice the traditional American virtue of minding our own business. But in the defense of marriage against those who want to redefine it — whether they be polygamists in Texas or homosexual activists in California — we should make an exception.

After all, one-man, one-woman mo nogamous marriage is more than an anomaly of religion. It is the foundation of the political... READ MORE

Mass Distraction

Seeking Sanity, Getting Grace

It’s hard to admit, but I don’t enjoy going to Mass as much as I once did. Before I was a mother, I’d often walk out of Mass feeling that the grace I’d received from hearing the Scriptures and receiving the Eucharist was actually palpable. These days, what’s palpable is the aching in my arms from restraining my daughter as she tries to squirm out of the pew and explore. I’ve usually spent a part of... READ MORE
