College Admissions and Facebook

Most of you know that my son Eric is in the throes of applying to college. It’s likely during the next several months that I’ll be writing a great deal on this topic, not only for those of you with high school seniors, but also for those with younger children too. You’d be amazed how quickly this process sneaks up on you, and it seems impossible to be “over-prepared” to apply to college.
So many... READ MORE
Discussing Death and College Prep
Posted by Lisa Hendey in News on Friday, August 28, 2009
On this week’s show (click here to listen or click on the player above), Danielle, Elizabeth and I share a conversation about how to discuss the topic of death and dying with children of varying ages. With the death of recent high profile public figures, our families have had ongoing discussions about end of life issues from a Catholic perspective and the comfort we find in Catholic rituals for funerals. ... Powerpointed Critique

Here’s an interesting article about the use and abuse of technology in the college classroom.
I have to admit it was the stiff criticism of PowerPoint that drew me in.
(My apologies to those who love it, but most people use it so stiffly that I’ve grown truly to dread the words “Powerpoint Presentation.”)
However, the article turns out not to be a knock on technology so much as an interesting discussion... READ MORE

First Things Journal is ranking colleges and needs your help.
In order to evaluate what campus life is like for students of faith, they need current college students—or recent grads—to participate in this short survey.
If you know a student of faith, please pass the link along. I know I’ll be interested in the results.
Four Years Pay Off

I mentioned last week that my sister and I were planning to take a trip with our babies this past weekend, to attend our sister Miriel’s graduation from college down in Florida.
So, we went.
It was definitely a grueling weekend. Our forty-eight-hour whirlwind trip had us getting up at 4am on Friday and 5am on Sunday to catch flights, and the hours in between were packed, including a 1.5-hour baccalaureate... READ MORE
Virtual College Fair

We’ve officially entered into “college craziness” in the Hendey home. Now that Eric, our high school junior, has hit his stride during the Spring semester, it’s seriously time to start discerning the college decisions.
Our kitchen table is stacked with AP study guides, SAT practice exams, ACT prep manuals, and two separate “best colleges” books that are the size of the county phone book.
Every day,... READ MORE
Maybe Baby

As I was folding laundry this morning, it occurred to me that Henry will be a baby until he can no longer wear a onesie.
I’m hoping I can find one of these in an 18-T for his first day of college (should he choose my alma mater).

For the past few days, I’ve been traveling in the Midwest, visiting with my family in Chicago and taking in the Notre Dame vs. Stanford football game. I thought I’d take the next few days to share a few reflections with you from these adventures.
One of the primary purposes for the trip was to begin the process of looking at colleges with our 17 year old Junior, Eric. And what greater place to start... READ MORE

Compass Points to Christ
Luke Zumo, Loyola University
Growing up in a Catholic family, Luke Zumo was already involved with his faith before college. As a senior at Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, La., he was a student minister, mentoring a small group of freshmen by learning and applying virtues and Gospel values.
But adjusting to classes, basketball, and campus life in his freshman year at... READ MORE
