Comfort and Style for Tender Tootsies

High heels to live in ... and die for!

If you’re anything like me, you occasionally enjoy slipping your feet into pair of pretty high-heels. But if you’re anything like Calah (and most gals, I suspect) rare is the high-heel wearing experience that doesn’t leave your feet screaming for mercy!

Never fear, fine ladies. I am the master of finding comfortable heels. I present to you my short list of shoe companies that have a reputation for... READ MORE

Putting Them First

Finding a good kind of unbalance

Sometimes I just have to trust that God knows better than I do.

After I posted yesterday about what a busy and fun week we have going on, I was awakened at 3am today by a little guy whose body felt suspiciously warm to me. I didn’t bother to take his temperature in the dark, but in the morning it was registering 103°. Not freakishly high, but enough to scare me, especially since Camilla very rarely... READ MORE

To Find the Answer

Start by looking in the right place

Today was another rough day, and when my (sainted) husband got home from work he suggested I go out by myself for a couple hours while he tackled bedtime solo.

Honestly, I intended to go to the bookstore, but through a concatenation of circumstances I ended up at our parish’s Adoration chapel instead.

During our extended period of subfertility I regularly found solace in Eucharistic Adoration. I would... READ MORE

Kindness to Others

Being "there" in the hard times

Years ago, before any of our boys were born, I suffered a miscarriage. In that time of sadness and grief, I was blessed by the cards and meals, the beautiful flower arrangements and understanding words showered upon us by family and friends.

Soon after we came home from the hospital with Henry a few years ago, some friends of ours experienced a similar hardship, a miscarriage of their first pregnancy.... READ MORE

Stuffed Animal Love

Does your child have a favorite?

When Camilla was a baby, she was very difficult to put to sleep.

I read Elizabeth Pantley’s book The No-Cry Sleep Solution (which I highly recommend, by the way) and decided to start trying some of Pantley’s suggestions.

One of the suggestions was to try to help your child get attached to a blanket or stuffed animal, since a “lovey” can help a child comfort herself to sleep.  This seemed reasonable... READ MORE

So Sad

Praying for Amy

I am so sad and shocked to hear of the death of Michael Dubruiel.

I met Michael and Amy this summer at the New Media Celebration, and they were so generous and kind. It was a great day of hanging out, asking them a million questions and getting a million answers. They are that wonderful.

Prayers for Amy and the children, for peace and comfort and a sense of God’s presence in the midst of this dark time.

Seeking Comfort

Like a sweet embrace

It is currently 26 degrees in Georgia, so Arwen’s post about comfort items —food, blankets and books—is quite timely for me.

Interestingly, my latest Real Simple magazine came in the mail yesterday and there was a bit in it about comfort food. Most people, said the article, automatically think of mac and cheese as the ultimate comfort food, but a poll of workers at the magazine came up with a rather diverse list of foods that also offer comfort, everything from homemade soup to meatloaf to chocolate pudding.

I love homemade mac-and-cheese, but I think my ultimate comfort food is cheese grits (pictured at left). I could eat grits everyday, but especially on the cold, blustery days that many of us are experiencing lately.

What about you? What’s your favorite comfort food?

Comfort Reading

Heartwarming books for cold days

The current temperature where we live is 0°F.  The high tomorrow is 4°.

It is weather for staying inside and curling up under blankets and consuming things like homemade macaroni and cheese and hot chocolate with lots of marshmallows.

I’m a big fan of comfort food, and in my personal opinion it’s even more effective when paired with other comfort items.  My personal favorite is comfort books.

I’ve... READ MORE
