Some Comments on Comments

You know what made me sad recently?

I was reading this discussion over at Rachel’s blog when I came across a couple of comments that made it clear that some people avoid visiting Faith & Family Live because of the tone of some of the discussions here.

One said:

The large blog (where I’m assuming this backlash took place) is a wonderful thing that has blessed, inspired, and helped me MANY times. But... READ MORE

Slow Mama, Fast Toddler

How do you discipline a little one from the couch?

This pregnancy and my activity restrictions have brought a new challenge: disciplining my toddler.

For me, discipline with a two-year-old mainly consists of teaching him that I mean what I say, especially when it comes to hurting others. In theory, it is tedious but fairly simple: if I say “Blaise, don’t do that” and he doesn’t obey, then I grab him and hold him and tell him again, firmly, and he... READ MORE

Comments from Stangers

put to a catchy tune

Here is a cute video from a family with seven kids—singing about all the comments they get when out in public. Can you identify with any of these? I sure can!

HT: My friend Allison who is not Cath-o-lic but still has a great big beautiful family.

You Can't Judge a Mom By Her Purse

and other observations of the good and the bad of online communication

I usually don’t respond. I usually take the advice that I offer sensitive fellow bloggers all the time, and choose instead to be “above it all.”

But this time I feel compelled to respond to a combox conversation. Because I think the interaction in this particular circumstance demonstrates something much larger and more important than my own precious feelings or the nastiness of petty comments.

Because... READ MORE

Kindness in the Combox

Why be mean?

I wrote a post recently that received a few snarky comments. By snarky I mean these comments had an edge that wasn’t called for.

Of course this begs the question, “is an edge ever called for?” I’d like to think not, but do any clicking on the Internet and you’ll find plenty. People feel quite confident at the helm of a keyboard and relative anonymity and my goodness you can encounter some mean personalities... READ MORE

Soliciting Comments on Comments

Please vote in our poll!

UPDATE: I’m having trouble getting the poll to appear properly here. Please vote at PollDaddy (but read the explanation below first!).

We’ve had some trouble recently with readers being unable to find their comments in posts after they’ve added them.

New comments appear in the sidebar of the F&F blog page under the “recent comments” heading. This can be a handy way to keep track of conversations and... READ MORE

Wrap-up of the Week of Mary

sharing wisdom from your comments

It’s been a lovely week of Mary, and today, on the last day of Mary’s month of May, I’d like to conclude my week of guest blogging by sharing some of your wisdom.  If you are one of those people who won’t click through, I want to thank you all, right here at the beginning of this post, for being such a wonderful audience and for making this week truly beautiful for me.  May Mary, our mother and sister... The Book Title Search Continues

102 Titles suggested so far for new book on Catholics Returning Home

The Book Title search is still on! Last week I mentioned that I was looking for a good title for the book. So far I have 102 great suggestions - which probably should be enough to make a good decision on… but thought I would throw out the call one more time. Just in case there is something new we haven’t hit on yet!

Of course then will come the really hard part - narrowing it down to one! The titles... READ MORE

Take That, Spammers!

Faith and Family launches comment verification

Well, we finally got tired of trying to keep up with the spam that sometimes makes its way into the comments here at Faith and Family Live.

Beginning today, we’re implementing “captcha”—a word verification program that ensures actual human beings are leaving comments here as opposed to spamming robots. Now, when you post a comment here, part of the form will ask you to re-type some letters and numbers into a box before your comment will be accepted.

Because your comments are a vital part of what we do here at Faith and Family, I hate to do anything that makes it less convenient for you to leave them, but at this point this step has become necessary. Please let me know if you encounter any difficulties with this new feature.

You Asked For It

new and improved commenting!

One of the suggestions we received from readers on our Faith and Family feedback page was to allow “comments on comments.”

Well now we’ve got it! When you read an entry now, you have the option of posting a comment on the original post or responding directly to another comment. To post a comment to the original post, just click the “post a comment” link at the bottom of the post, above the list of comments. To post a reply to an individual comment, click the “reply” link you see in the upper right hand corner of the comment.

Let me know if you have problems or questions about the new set up. Happy commenting!
