Going Creative

How do you make it happen?

My mother - who’s been crocheting for years - recently took up knitting as well.

I’m happy for her, and not just because of the sweet little hats she makes for my babies. I thought the crocheting was cool too, but the knitting is special because she’s not doing it solo. She’s joined a weekly knitting group, and wow! She seems to be having a lot of fun.

Talking to my mom about it, I see how excited... READ MORE

Women Only Swim Times

Says You: Creeping Sharia or Community Accommodation?

Do women-only swim times offend you?

I tuned in for news headlines earlier this week, and a local radio host was up in arms about a community pool in our area offering women-only swim times twice a week.

Since the hours were requested by a group of Muslim women, his concern was that this was an instance of “creeping Sharia”—the gradual overturn of Western laws in favor of Islamic law.

Is it?

I’m... READ MORE

Revealing Our Cracks

Could it help?

The other day I put this out on Twitter:

If you’ve never sobbed, “What do you WANT from me?” at your baby… well, you’re a better mom than I am, I guess.

I got a surprising - and comforting - number of responses from other moms who’ve been there. Their reassurances helped me cope with a rough afternoon.

But the one that stuck with me, that still has me thinking four days later, was from a mom who said... READ MORE

Some Comments on Comments

You know what made me sad recently?

I was reading this discussion over at Rachel’s blog when I came across a couple of comments that made it clear that some people avoid visiting Faith & Family Live because of the tone of some of the discussions here.

One said:

The large blog (where I’m assuming this backlash took place) is a wonderful thing that has blessed, inspired, and helped me MANY times. But... READ MORE

Let's Pray for Our Marriages

Help Us, O Holy Mother

My heart has been aching for our Faith & Family community in recent weeks.

I have noticed a lot of pain, a lot of heartache, in the comments of recent Coffee Talks (especially in the marriage and NFP threads).

I thought it might be a good idea for us to pray together ... especially for our marriages. Will you join me in a novena to the Immaculate Heart of Mary for this intention, beginning today? I will post reminders here on the blog for the nine days.

O Most Blessed Mother, heart of love, heart of mercy, ever listening, caring, consoling, hear our prayer. As your children, we implore your intercession with Jesus your Son. Receive with understanding and compassion the petitions we place before you today, especially for the women of the Faith & Family community. Bless our marriages, bless our husbands, heal our hearts, and make us strong.

We are comforted in knowing your heart is ever open to those who ask for your prayer. We trust to your gentle care and intercession, those whom we love and who are sick or lonely or hurting. Help all of us, Holy Mother, to bear our burdens in this life until we may share eternal life and peace with God forever.

Amen.

The Good People Of Tucson

in which I beg to differ with just about everyone
Gabe Zimmerman

It is terribly sad that it often takes an awful event to illuminate the incredible goodness all around us and how much we have to be grateful for.

A family in my neighborhood lost their home in a fire two nights ago. We all heard the sirens in the middle of the night and later heard the terrible news.

Four children were involved, one now sadly passed away, one fighting for life, two in critical condition... READ MORE

Watching the Cliffs

I first saw the story on my daughter’s blog. She called the man a hero — and she’s right.

Australian Don Ritchie watches the nearby cliffs from his home overlooking Sydney Harbor. According to reports from earlier this year and a powerful new piece that just appeared in LifeSiteNews, this retired gentleman has saved at least 160 people from a leap that would end their lives.

How does he do it? He... READ MORE

You Can't Judge a Mom By Her Purse

and other observations of the good and the bad of online communication

I usually don’t respond. I usually take the advice that I offer sensitive fellow bloggers all the time, and choose instead to be “above it all.”

But this time I feel compelled to respond to a combox conversation. Because I think the interaction in this particular circumstance demonstrates something much larger and more important than my own precious feelings or the nastiness of petty comments.

Because... READ MORE
