Casual Fridays - Work/Service Connection

Does working help or diminish your ability to do community service?

This week, on my weekly “tech” update for the Son Rise Morning Show, I shared about the latest Pew report on the “Social Side of the Internet”.  The study gives a fascinating look at how Internet users, and in particular those active on social networking sites, are more likely to be involved in volunteer efforts and in service groups.

Thinking about and speaking about community service made me ponder... READ MORE

Panera - Pay What You Can

Will this experiment work?

I LOVE my local Panera Bread.  Along with its strong coffee and free Internet connection, our cafe offers a great spot for me to have meetings or enjoy an occasional and affordable lunch with girlfriends.

Now Panera CEO Ron Shaich wants to do more than just provide great food.  He wants to “make a difference in the world”.  Shaich and Panera recently opened their first non-profit restaurant in St. Louis... READ MORE

Jury Duty Blues

Have you served your civic duty lately?

All week long, I’ve been singing the “Jury Duty Blues”.  For each of the past few years, my jury duty summons routinely arrived in the mail each winter and I somehow managed to consistently dodge my service.  For us moms, there never seems to be a convenient time to serve.  Last February, my doctor wrote a note excusing me from service during my radiation treatments.  So when I received that tell-tale... Praying for Gulf Coast Families

Please join our family in praying for those already impacted and those in the path of Hurricane Gustav

It feels eerily like deja vu.  A little over three years ago, my Mom sat in my home watching CNN for hours on end as Hurricane Katrina ravaged her hometown of Gulfport, Mississippi.

My parents moved to Gulfport a few years before the storm and had already fallen in love with their new home and especially their parish.

They joined my sister Brady, her husband Matt and their son Patrick every Sunday... READ MORE

At Home in a New School

A new start for students displaced by Katrina

Congratulations to my fourth grade nephew Patrick and his fellow schoolmates at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School in Long Beach, Mississippi.

Almost three years after the utter devastation of their former Catholic school buildings in Hurricane Katrina, the children went back to school today at a newly opened, state of the art school building!  For the past three years, the students have been studying... READ MORE
