...And A Side Of Confession

http://vintagemetalart.com

My friend Fr. Richard, stationed in the Bronx, posted a Facebook status I can’t resist sharing.

I’m starving and stop to grab a slice. A pretty woman’s got a splinter in her eye. Picture 5 pizza guys hustling to help get it out. Don’t ask me why, but she tells me she hasn’t been to confession since she was a kid. So I say let’s do it.
“Here?”
“Well, my car is right there.”
We sit in my Mini and take care of business. Coming to my Mass Sunday. Spirit blows where he wills. Ain’t it so?
Yeah, my slice got cold.

Hilarious and wonderful, no?

How Big Is He?

Learning to be small in the confessional

We were waiting to go to confession before Mass, and it looked like the line was too long for everyone to make it through in time.

Then one of the parish’s deacons, already vested, came down the row, whispering to us. “Father has asked that when you go into the confessional, you just list your sins. Don’t waste time trying to explain them. Keeping it simple makes confession better, and quicker too.”... READ MORE

Friendly Reminder: Go to Confession!

Get the grace that's waiting for you

We all need spiritual nudges now and then.

And when it comes to the sacrament of reconciliation, some of us need a really big nudge (read: kick in the pants) to get ourselves there.

I used to aim for going to confession once a month. That meant that in reality, I got there every 2-3 months. No good.

So now I aim for every 2 weeks. And that means I do usually get there about once a month. Every once... READ MORE

Pardon & Peace

pleasant encounters upon going to Confession
John M. Esparolini

The kids and I were at Franciscan Monastery in DC yesterday for back-to-school confessions.

(We like to start the year fresh!)

When I emerged from the confessional, the driver for a visiting pilgrimage group approached to ask if he could sneak in in front of my kids, as he had only a few moments to spare before returning to his bus.

I easily assented, but he clasped my hand with such warmth and... READ MORE

Un-Catholic Guilt

I never know what people are talking about when they refer to “Catholic guilt.”

Ethnic Mother guilt I understand.

But “Catholic”?

One of the strong attractions of Catholicism for me was the sacrament of Confession.

We’re the only game in town that offers a safe, simple, all-natural, completely free, 100% effective method for unburdening ourselves of guilt of any kind.

Which is why, in a letter sent to conference participants in Italy,... READ MORE

No More Guilt!

From the Editors

April: Years ago, I was in an unfortunate car accident. Thank God no one was hurt, but my car sure was — and all the kids (three at the time) were in the back seat.

A week later, Tom and I went to confession on Saturday afternoon.

“Why are you going to confession?” asked my then 4-year-old. “Oh yeah,” she said. “You hit that car!”

Well, no, I didn’t have to confess running into a car, since I didn’t... READ MORE

That ‘Just-Baptized’ Feeling

all you need is a contrite heart

Here’s a humorous yet worthwhile reminder to get clean from the inside out before Easter. Alas, we missed the special date in Brooklyn, but confession’s still available in a parish near you.

If you or someone you know needs a little help fulfilling the Easter duty, the National Catholic Register has confession guides and a guide to Holy Week.

Confession Denied

I came, I tried, I was turned away

Remember our confession assignment on Saturday? Go to confession & bring your kids?

Well, I tried to complete it.

I told the older kids to get ready, looked up the time for confession at a parish about 30 minutes away, and we all got into the car.

Confession was listed as beginning at 3:30, and we arrived at 3:35. There was someone already in the confessional, so we began a line.

After two of the... READ MORE

Come Home For Easter

Confession 101

If you know someone who needs a little encouragement to reconcile with the Church this Lent, Busted Halo offers a video primer on Confession.

Part I

Part II

(I nod politely to the Anchoress for these.)

The Mood Around Here

Us: Hey, Teti kids! School’s out for Christmas break and you’ve made your pre-Christmas Confession. How do you feel?
Them: Kinda like this.
