Confirmation Gifts

share your ideas

Have you started celebrating Confirmation in your parish? We have ours next week!

I’m thinking about nice gifts to give—I noticed in our latest edition of Faith and Family magazine an idea to give a framed print or icon of the confirmandi’s patron saint. Other good ideas are a nice book on the Holy Spirit, or a special rosary.

I’d love to hear suggestions for confirmation gifts, especially if you’ve... READ MORE

The Perfect Girl Gift

What's your suggestion?

With Confirmations, First Communions and Graduations approaching, it’s the season for giving. Last week, I received a query from one of our readers who asked,

“I have a daughter who will be graduating from college this year and would like to give her a special and meaningful gift that she can use throughout her life that will help her to always strive to be the woman God is calling her to be. Do... READ MORE

Facing Last Judgment

Another story for your catechetical toolbox

In my confirmation class, I like to tell the kids stories to help them remember the truths they are learning.

When we learn about the Eucharist I tell them the story of St. Tarcisius and ask why would this young man die for Jesus if he was just carrying a piece of bread?

When we talk about God the Father, I do a dramatic telling of the prodigal son to portray how much God loves each of us.

This... READ MORE

Sacramental Gifts that Keep On Giving

What is your gift of choice?

I loved this recent article at the Catholic News Service Blog that reported on a young Confirmand’s decision to donate the cash gifts she received for her Confirmation to a worthy cause.

Brianna’s decision to donate to the Alzheimer’s Association on behalf of her beloved Grandmother brought a smile to my face - how wonderful that in seeking spiritual formation, she also learned the value of service... READ MORE

Confirmation: How Do You Celebrate?

what are your Confirmation traditions?

Our eldest son will be confirmed in two weeks.

Naturally we’re excited, but I’m curious how others celebrate.

My husband was Confirmed young and doesn’t recall whether he had a party, and I was Confirmed as an adult the same day as my Baptism & First Communion—so between us there is no sense of family tradition on the subject.

We have a meaningful gift in mind, and there will of course be a little party—but I’d love to hear what you do in your homes to mark the under-appreciated, least-understood sacrament?

Compulsory Confirmation?

Would you force a teen to prepare for Confirmation?

Today’s article on teenage mass issues by Tom and Caroline McDonald reminded me of a recent email query from a distraught mom that landed in my inbox:

Any suggestions for help with my daughter who came home from the first night of confirmation class and tearfully announced that she can’t make this commitment because she’s not sure she believes in God…? It’s going to be a long year.

Obviously, these... READ MORE

Yes We Scan

From Poland, a creative approach to checking Mass attendance

This story from CathNews USA caught my eye this morning and had me checking to make sure it wasn’t April Fool’s Day:

A Polish priest in the country’s southern town of Gryfow Slaski has installed an electronic reader in his church for schoolchildren to leave their fingerprints in order to monitor their attendance at mass.  The pupils will mark their fingerprints every time they go to church over three... Double Stuff Theology

How an Oreo Cookie Mirrors the Trinity

I teach confirmation prep to ninth graders at my local parish. The confirmation requirement for the students is to meet for an hour twice a month: once in a classroom with me and the other hour in homes with their peers. I don’t love the model, but that is why I decided to become a teacher. Instead of complaining about the system and doing nothing, I joined the system so I could influence those 25... READ MORE
