What Do You Wish You'd Known?

Says You: what should converts understand?

I’ve been asked to prepare the friend of a friend to be received into the Church at the end of the summer.

This is a great joy.

The person in question has already done a great deal of the work herself and is a lovely mixture of both hunger for truth and the kind of wisdom that comes from praying seriously. She’s been reading a gazillion catechetical books and can already answer most of her own questions.

I have guidelines from my pastor, with whom I’m working closely, and an RCIA syllabus to work from.

I can’t help but think the converts and experienced RCIA teachers in the audience might have some insight about what converts from evangelicalism most need to understand as they prepare to come into the Church—perhaps something not likely found on a typical syllabus?

If you were planning our sessions together, what would they include?

Go, Maddy!

I’m not an American Idol fan (not my kind of singing), but enjoyed this uplifting clip about new contestant Maddy Curtis.

The guys at Creative Minority Report report that Maddy’s entire family converted to Catholicism a few years ago. She’s the 9th of 12 children, and her mom is pro-life activist Barbara Curtis:

“The wonderful part is that during her audition for Idol, producers highlighted the Down Syndrome children in her family and they quoted Maddy saying “I think some people are a little skeptical of Down syndrome. Those four boys bring out the best in every person they meet. They see the world in colors, and we need to see the world that way.”

Nice!

Why Catholics Are Leaving

Latest Pew Study looks at Changes in Religious Affiliation in the U.S.

A headline caught my eye in my local paper today:  “Americans religious drifters, report finds”.  The article went on to give the details of the recently released Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life’s study entitled “Faith in Flux”.

We in our domestic churches have cause for alarm and concern.  The study states that “Catholicism has suffered the greatest net loss in the process of religious change.... READ MORE

Tools For Re-Evangelization

Catholic & pro-life resources

One positive and nearly universal response I’ve seen to the election results is a Catholic commitment to get serious about re-evangelization and pro-life education.

Here are some exciting new projects I’ve stumbled across recently that might interest you for their nimble, “hip” (for lack of a better term) and non-threatening approach.

1. Catholics Come Home. Perhaps like me you saw some of the powerful... READ MORE

Happy Feast Day, Honey!

Today, we celebrate the Feast of St. Luke, Evangelist

Five years ago, after seventeen years of marriage, I had the joy of watching my husband Greg be received into the Catholic Church through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).

When Greg was confirmed, he took as his patron saint St. Luke, the Evangelist and patron saint of physicians.  Greg’s devotion to St. Luke seemed fitting, since he is an emergency medicine physician.  Today, we... READ MORE
