Eating Happier

I need help!

I don’t usually make New Year’s resolutions, and I’m especially not doing it this year.  At 35 weeks pregnant, who needs that kind of pressure?

However, I have been feeling the urge - I suspect as a result of Christmas Cookie Overload - to make some small changes in the kind of food our family has been eating.  Specifically at dinnertime, when our meals of late have been distinctly comfort-food-ish,... READ MORE

Slow Cooking with Style

It's time to break out the crock pot!

Here in Fresno, California, the weather forecast for the next several days calls for temperatures in the high 80’s and low 90’s, which doesn’t exactly feel like “sweater weather”.

But despite the heat, I’m trying to find crock pot recipes that will please my family and ease my “to do” list, all in one fell swoop.  With all of the evening rehearsals, practices, meetings and more, it can become a true... READ MORE

Grace Before Meals

A little bloggy link

Have you heard of Fr. Leo Patalinghug?

Fr. Leo is the host of Grace Before Meals, a web-based cooking show that is, with God’s grace, about to be picked up to air on television. According to the website, the “fundamental concept” of Grace Before Meals is that “the simple act of creating and sharing a meal can strengthen all kinds of relationships.”

Fr. Leo was the keynote speaker at this summer’s... READ MORE

Weird Friday Soup Dream

What could this dream possibly mean and what would you bring?

Out here in California, I was awoken this morning by the strangest dream.

It was one of those vivid dreams, where you remember every detail.  I keep a notebook by my bed for just such occasions, as I’m a frequent dreamer.

In my dream, my doorbell rang and when I answered it I was shocked to see Arwen and Camilla.  Arwen informed me that Danielle had come up with the idea for all the Faith and Family... READ MORE

Frying Extravaganza

Making donuts makes me happy

I made donuts this weekend.

Actually, I made donuts twice this weekend, which is certainly a record for me.

Last year my sister and I started a tradition of making homemade cake donuts and caramel apples to honor the coming of fall.

It’s not quite fall yet, but we’re anticipating the season, so we did it on Saturday.  The caramel apples turned out okay, but the donuts were kind of a flop.  I mean,... READ MORE

Campfire Cooking

fun around the flame

Around here, fire is some seriously popular stuff.

It was such a rainy summer that we didn’t manage to have much campfire fun the past couple of months. With the arrival of cooler weather, though, we’re making up for lost time.

Fire! It’s pretty, it’s warm, it’s free, and you can cook stuff in it. Nothing beats gathering around a fire pit for an evening of marshmallow roasting and s’more making.

Loving Jesus, Serving Others

Some days, what is needed is not what we would choose to do

Cooking is a challenge for me. If you’ve known me longer than two minutes, you are already aware of this bit of my personal trivia. It’s not that I burn the food or give my family salmonella – it’s just very, very tough for me to decide what to cook, and then (when that overwhelming task is complete) to actually want to make the effort to cook it.

You can imagine, then, when the occasion arises to... READ MORE

Cooking During Pregnancy

The system saves the day

When I was pregnant with Camilla, I failed miserably at grocery shopping and cooking.  At the time, I didn’t have a meal-planning system in place - I’d generally go to the grocery store, buy foods we liked, then try to put together meals from them as each night came.  When my nausea and food aversion hit and I could barely stand the grocery store, let alone the idea of thinking of a meal to make every... Extraordinary Sauce for Ordinary Time

Cooking fresh from the garden is twice the fun.

Ironically, even though I’m a bad and quite disinterested cook, both of my teenage sons have a growing interest in culinary arts.  Eric, the almost 17 year old, harvested his first round of fresh basil this week from our new garden.  It gave us the perfect opportunity to try out a recipe from Fr. Leo Patalinghug and Grace Before Meals

In conjunction with SQPN, Fr. Leo recently created a series... READ MORE

Kids in the Kitchen

Little Helpers Make for Big Fun!

I love cooking with my kids — as long it’s my idea. When I am attempting a seven-layer cake or a complicated company recipe, I prefer to go solo. Of course, it always seems to be at these times that eager faces gather around my kitchen counter, fingers threaten to dip into my mixing bowls, and little ones mouth the measuring spoons.

If the idea of kids in the kitchen sends your perfectionist heart... READ MORE
