Tell Us About The Religious Liberty Rallies

Did you attend one of the 146 nationwide rallies for religious liberty yesterday?

Share your experiences (or links to your blog posts on the topic) in comments.

My family attended the rally outside the HHS building in DC. Here’s video of our keynote speaker, Star Parker.

Towards the close of the speech she has a moving tribute to all that Catholic institutions do to care for the poor, but she begins by contending that the HHS mandate is a blessing in disguise: because it affords religious believers an opportunity to have a conversation about sexual mores that we ought to have had a long time ago.

She speaks as someone trapped in a very dark place for a very long time and utterly convinced of the liberating and humanizing power of the Gospel.

(Yes, that’s Lila Rose you see consulting with MC Patrick Mahoney in the background.)

Moms of the Pro-Life Movement

http://www.sba-list.org/suzy-b-blog/susan-b-anthony-list-seeking-young-women-leaders

Here’s a nice piece in the Washington Post’s On Faith column on the young moms of the pro-life movement.

It features my friend Marjorie Dannenfelser of the Susan B. Anthony List.
(Great picture at the link, Marjorie!)

Recent news stories about the new vitality of the antiabortion movement and its legislative achievements — more than a dozen states enacting record numbers of abortion restrictions this... READ MORE

Pro-Life PSAs

These two quick PSAs running in Chile might put a smile on your face.

The ads are cute but what catches my attention is the slogan: “Chile grows with you.” Not so long ago any Western nation would have shared the assumption that each new life represented growth and continuation for its people and culture; now it seems so radical!

With a polite nod to Jill Stanek.

President Buchanan Celebrates Dred Scott Anniversary

what false "rights" do to actual rights
Louis Schultze

President Obama released a short statement on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

What other fundamental “rights” must be protected yet discouraged?  Suppose the President or other Roe defenders had said:

I recommit myself to protecting the free exercise of religion, but will support initiatives to discourage faith.
I recommit myself to protecting freedom of speech, but will work to discourage people from having opinions or uttering them.... READ MORE

On The Path of St. James

B16 visits Galicia & Barcelona

For a pope who intended not to travel much, Benedict XVI sure gets around.

This weekend he took a quick hop to northern Spain to observe the jubilee of Santiago de Compostela and to dedicate a new church.

In his principal homily of the journey, the Pope asks what Christianity can offer Europe.

What is the specific and fundamental contribution of the Church to that Europe which for half a century... READ MORE

"I Love This Week"

Last night on the House floor, Congressman Jim Jordan of Ohio explained why he loves March for Life week in Washington.

Many more Congressmen rose to defend life too. Find links to their statements here.

Jordan is right—the East Coast march is like a big family reunion—even on a cold, wet day, as it will be in Washington today. (I am trying to coffee up—sorry, Arwen!—against the cold before the Tetis head out.)

We’re marching with our parish, and overnight we hosted a student group from Atlanta which drove up to participate. The poor things had to drive through freezing rain all night and only got in at 3 am. Those are some determined marchers!

Are you marching? Where? East coast, West coast, Atlanta, other?  This year there is a virtual March for Life, too. Check it out.

Scott Heard 'Round The World

says you: What about Scott Brown?

I can’t believe we let the day go by yesterday without giving you a chance to register your thoughts on the election of Scott Brown Tuesday night.

He seems very likable and ran a positive, upbeat campaign. For someone like myself with an allergy to bureaucracy, his campaign talking points were attractive.

It appears to me he tapped into a groundswell of distaste among all voters for “party machines.”... READ MORE

Go, Maddy!

I’m not an American Idol fan (not my kind of singing), but enjoyed this uplifting clip about new contestant Maddy Curtis.

The guys at Creative Minority Report report that Maddy’s entire family converted to Catholicism a few years ago. She’s the 9th of 12 children, and her mom is pro-life activist Barbara Curtis:

“The wonderful part is that during her audition for Idol, producers highlighted the Down Syndrome children in her family and they quoted Maddy saying “I think some people are a little skeptical of Down syndrome. Those four boys bring out the best in every person they meet. They see the world in colors, and we need to see the world that way.”

Nice!

My Mother The Saint

literally
CNS/Nancy Wiechec

I thought you might enjoy this interview with Laura Molla, daughter of St. Gianna Molla.

Two things jumped out at me. One is that holiness isn’t easy—not for us, and not for the people around us.

With St. Gianna’s death, the Church gained a saint for our age, but Laura and her siblings lost their mother. She talks a little bit about coming to grips with that—and about the holiness she perceives in... READ MORE
