Lent At Your Parish

Says You: How does your parish observe Lent?

While I was on the path to conversion, I had a dear friend who kept needling me to “go Anglican” instead.

(Yes, I was the kind of nerd who stayed up late nights debating ecclesiology. You can’t hold it against me, I’ve been baptized since.)

Somehow it’s always at the peak of this activity that the kids (and sometimes... READ MORE

Nevertheless, compulsory shoe removal strikes against my sensibilities.

  • I didn’t grow up that way.
  • I lived for awhile with a Venezuelan roommate who had a cultural horror of bare feet. One just didn’t take one’s shoes off... READ MORE

Horace’s Christmas Disappointment

a cautionary tale

We’ve read each other’s culinary traditions for Christmas. What about the other customs?

When do you go to Mass? When do you open presents? We host a dinner for extended family Christmas Eve, attend Midnight Mass, then travel across town to my mom’s for the assembled cousins to exchange gifts, followed by brunch (lox and bagels always! plus other stuff) and generally hanging out together until the...
