Stuff Parents Say

what's your favorite?

A few years ago, when my babies suddenly got a little older, I found myself having to answer that age-old question: why?

“Why can’t we watch this?”

“Why can’t I go there?”

“Why can’t I stay up past nine o’clock?”

These and a million other inquiries started making the room spin and I felt I was always working on a small thesis to explain to my children the reasoning for our decisions. I’d launch into... READ MORE

Books on Screen

E-readers: yea or nay?

I’m a book lover, and I can’t imagine ever completely giving up the joy of holding a book in my hands and turning pages.

That being said, I’m fascinated by the concept of e-readers. Amazon.com’s Kindle seems to be the most widely known, although there are many available. You can see some reviews here.

Apple also has its iPad, which functions as an e-reader, and my youngest brother has one and does... READ MORE

Balancing Act

What does it look like for you?

This week, we’ve got something going on every day: three playdates, Camilla’s Atrium catechism class, and the ballet-class/playgroup that meets in our living room.

I know that by Friday my laundry pile will have grown to an enormous size, but in the meantime we are having a very fun week. I’m energized and happy and the days are passing quickly. During weeks when we’re cooped up in the house with... READ MORE

Small Ways to Simplify

How do you make stressful days less so?

This Thursday, Blaise and I are catching a morning flight for a weekend trip to visit his godparents several states away. We’ve had it planned for months.

Then last week we found out Bryan has to take a business trip this week. He’ll be flying home on a red-eye and landing at 6:00 Thursday morning, just a few hours before my flight takes off.

Fortunately my parents live not too far away, so we’re... READ MORE

Breaking the Policy

Got potty-retraining advice for me?

Other parents warn about it, and it’s true: once you have a child, people dispense advice very freely. Often too freely, as I learned when our high-needs daughter came along. There’s something about a fussy, non-sleeping baby that draws advice-givers like flies.

As my husband always says, “If they want to give advice, they should come and take care of the baby for a night. That’ll put them in a better... READ MORE

Please Don't Say That

What are your family's forbidden words?

Yesterday Camilla and I were unloading laundry from the dryer when she suddenly said, “Stupid!”

I glanced at her, trying to play it cool, and as she began to repeat the word it became clear that she wasn’t using it as an adjective to describe either of us.  She was just saying it because she liked the sound.

Still.  “Stupid” is not a term we want our child using.  I gently told her that she needed... READ MORE

‘Am I Too Catholic?’

Protecting kids from negative cultural influences

A reader wrote me recently with this question (I’ve edited out some specifics):

“Am I too Catholic? Having never really lived a Catholic family life, I have been struggling to understand, live, and teach the Catholic faith in our little family.

Sometimes, I feel like I’m a fundamentalist in my beliefs because I am so very different from my friends and family. For example, Harry Potter (won’t let my... READ MORE

How Do You Video?

Answering the television question

Bryan and I, like my parents before us, do not have a TV set in our house.  Ten years ago we probably would have chosen to own a TV and VCR, but these days we can watch DVDs on the computer and keep up with a couple current TV shows online, so we’re perfectly happy not having an actual television.
We’ve discussed it and decided that we are fine with our kids watching a certain amount of video, amount... READ MORE
