Winter Decorating

Perking up the house after Christmas

When I was a kid I dreaded the end of the Christmas season when Mom took the decorations down. The house looked bereft without them.

As an adult I have more control - this explains why our tree is still up even though it’s Ordinary Time now - but eventually the greenery and twinkle lights must go. On that January day, I’m inevitably left looking around my living room feeling sad at its bareness.

Only... READ MORE

Mother's Little Helper

Rachel Recommends!

I love hanging pictures. I love that feeling of pushing through the angst of putting a hole—a hole!—in my wall and then having something lovely and soothing and wonderful to look at. It can be scary, committing to hanging something. I went a lot of years not putting anything anywhere because, what if I didn’t like it? What if I messed up? What if I destroyed the entire house in my efforts to beautify?... READ MORE

Christmas Time

Is it still in your home?

Every year, my aim is to keep our tree up until Epiphany. Most years, I don’t quite make it.

Usually, by New Year’s Day, our live Christmas tree is dangerously parched and needing to come down. Besides the safety issues, by January I’m generally just ready to take down the Christmas decor and move back towards simplicity and space.

This year I didn’t do any Christmas decorating until the week before... READ MORE

Pretty for Fall

needing autumn decoration inspiration

In 2008 we went on vacation in the beginning of October and I loved the lobby of the hotel where we stayed. It felt incredibly cozy to me. It took me a while to figure out why: it was decorated for fall.

I really like to be out and about during December, when holiday decorations are up. The whole world feels cozy and Christmas-y then, even if it is actually Advent. I love the feel of my own house... READ MORE

I made this!

which means you can too

Our youngest boy turned three last week and as he is going through a phase of intense watermelon-loving, when he saw this cake (on the cover of Woman’s Day!) he asked if he could have that for his birthday. I flipped through the magazine, studied the recipe and decided I could probably come up with something in the remote vacinity of perhaps looking like this. Maybe?

And voila! It worked! My sister... READ MORE

Tell Us About Your Tree

What does your family do?

We finally put up our Christmas tree yesterday afternoon.

“Now it’s SUPER almost-Cwismass!” squealed a very excited Daniel.

He’s three.

I happen to think that three years old is the perfect age for maximum holiday enjoyment. They are old enough to remember last year and to fully participate this year, but young enough so that not a bit of the grinchies or gimmies have entered their sweet little hearts... READ MORE

Baby vs Tree

What's your solution?

My daughter can’t wait for us to get our Christmas tree. She knows exactly where it will stand in the living room, and talks excitedly about the decorations: pretty lights! ornaments that look like balls!

If my son understood, he’d probably be excited to get the tree too. It will have strings of lights and tinsel and shiny hanging things, all very enticing. I imagine he’ll be thrilled when he sees... READ MORE

Fall Decor

celebrating the season

One of my favorite parts about this time of year is all the wonderful decorating a person can do—buy a bag of gourds at the grocery store and you can transform your front room into a Fall masterpiece!

I have been having fun adding little sprigs of color throughout the house, a few mini-pumpkins here, a harvest candle there. I still want to buy some mums for the front porch and I’ve got this idea for... READ MORE

Christmas Home Tour

Will you share a photo of your home at Christmas?

During the Christmas season, it is a wonderful blessing to visit the family and friends and see their homes all decorated for Christmas.

Over at CatholicMom.com, I’ve decided to hold a little Christmas Open House and welcome you into our humble abode.

I’m no Martha Stewart, but it’s fun to lay out the decorations we’ve accumulated over the years and see our home warmly lit with candles and twinkling lights.  If you note the photo above, you’ll see that a random guitar manages to make its way into every photo - instruments have taken the place of trucks and lost Legos in my home’s decor, but they still signify that a “real family” lives in this home!

Would you like to share a bit of your home, all dressed up for the holidays?  How about a peek at your adorable family, all dressed up for Christmas Mass?  Please use the form below to share a link to your personal Christmas pictures of any kind and we’ll all pop in for a little visit. No need to do dishes or pick up dirty laundry.  We promise to bring a tray of cookies when we stop by!
