Getting ready for Lent

My home is still an explosion of love—red construction paper hearts decorate the dining room, glittery hearts hang on a door. It’s all still here, reminding us of our Valentine’s celebration and it’s a festive spot in the sometimes dreary winter months.

But Lent begins next week, and there is something very non-Lenten about this celebratory scene. I’m hanging on to all of it until Shrove Tuesday,... READ MORE

Christmas Tree, Staying

What's your record?

“Tree? All gone?”

Blaise was confused this morning, pointing to the spot in our living room where our Christmas tree was standing until we took it down yesterday evening. He misses it, although he’s mollified by my promises that we’ll have another next year.

January 19th is our personal record for the latest we’ve left the Christmas decorations up. Usually we take them down after the Feast of the... READ MORE

Dreaming Of A Paperwhite Christmas

what are your favorite Christmas flowers?

Do you force bulbs at Christmas?

I’m not certain when I acquired the habit, but it no longer seems like Christmas to me without the delicate mini-daffodils known as paperwhite narcissus.

They’re so easy and quick to grow and they have a lovely delicate scent as well.

Some years, when I’m organized, I plant extras to give as hostess gifts during the season.

Not this year, alas—but mine are nonetheless... READ MORE

Trimming Tactics

Who decorates your tree?

I’m about to set a new personal record for the longest amount of time spent procrastinating about Christmas decorations.  At this point, it’s likely that our poor tree will continue to sit, in all it’s bare glory, in the middle of the living room surrounded by an assortment of Rubbermaid bins.

I remember the good old days, when my kids couldn’t wait to tear into those boxes and our ornaments hung... READ MORE

Decorating Dud

Are you ready to decorate?

They are springing up all around me in my neighborhood ... twinkly lights, inflatable yard art, and even a bit of fake snow.  And here I am, just settling into the first week of Advent.  In honesty, I must admit that I have yet to unearth the box that contains my Advent “stuff”, so we’ve made do by lighting a single candle on the kitchen table for the past few days.  No greenery yet, simply a bright... What Month Is It, Again?

Our culture jumps the gun, Yuletide-wise

We were still in swine-flu quarantine over last weekend, but on Wednesday I made it to the grocery store and had the brilliant idea of checking to see if there was any leftover Halloween candy on sale.

A mere four days after Halloween, all evidence of it was completely gone. There was, however, plenty of Christmas candy.

I glanced around and realized that the store was loaded with Christmas decorations... READ MORE
