A Summer Treat When Summer's Over

Indoor s'mores are delicious

We’re enjoying a short flashback here (high of 78 today!) but by the calendar, summer is over.

Every year I’m saddened to realize that, yet again, I didn’t get a chance to make s’mores. (We have a gas grill, so it’s harder than when I was a kid and the embers in our charcoal grill pretty much commanded us to roast marshmallows over them.)

S’mores are delicious. Their season is short. I should take... READ MORE

Better Than Ice Cream

Deliciousness, from your freezer

This pretty little pint caught my eye in the supermarket freezer the other day.

It’s not ice cream, it’s gelato. I’ve never been to Italy, but with this available in my freezer, I’m thinking why bother?

Just kidding. But this stuff is delicious. It’s a little bit pricey (I paid $4.99 per pint), but I am now the proud owner of a pint each of Double Dark Chocolate and Caribbean Coconut that are reserved FOR GROWN-UPS ONLY in my freezer. One small scoop of each is a perfect pairing that makes me happier than a whole bowlful of that stuff the kids love ever could.

How about you? What’s your favorite warm weather treat so far this summer?

Donut, Cake, or Something Else?

What's your Fat Tuesday treat of choice?

I’ve got one item on my to-do list before bed tonight: mix up the dough for tomorrow’s faschnachts. Faschnachts are a tradition in my family, from my mother’s German heritage. Every year on Fat Tuesday, she’d fry up a big batch and we’d rush home from school to get some, excited for one last indulgence before Lent.

In the area where I grew up, there are many more people with Polish heritage than German,... READ MORE

Berry Yummy for the Fourth

Let's share some festive ideas

I happen to think that one of the most fun things about summertime holidays—like the Fourth of July coming up this weekend—is planning fun dishes and desserts to serve at family gatherings.

In my browsing of cooking sites, this Berry Parfait looked easy and delicious.

Rachel shared a yummy flag cake last year as well.

There are a number of festive dessert recipes at Food Network too, especially Paula Deen’s Simply Delicious Strawberry Cake... READ MORE

A Grand Ole Flag

and a yummy one, too!

The following is an award-winning Fourth of July cake—I know this to be true because a few years ago I took second place in our neighborhood July 4th dessert contest! (Long-time readers will understand why I wept with joy upon hearing the news.)

The cake comes to us by way of The Barefoot Contessa, Ina Garten, and is every bit as delicious as it is patriotic and cute. I’m including the recipe here... READ MORE

Juicy and Delicious

The peach cobbler of my dreams

I’m not a chocolate person.  I will hardly ever say yes to the offer of a brownie, because I just don’t enjoy them that much.

And I will never say yes to a brownie if there is any kind of fruit dessert in the area.

I am all about the fruit desserts.  I adore blueberry pie, apple tart, and lemon bars.  (I have sought and found great recipes for all of those things.)

But at the top of my list is peach... READ MORE

Love It!

Now this I can handle

I came across this clever little dessert that I wanted to share—chocolate-dipped marshmallows that look like they will be delicious. What’s really nice about this recipe is that it looks like something I can actually pull together with zero effort.

(Between you and me, my plans for tomorrow night’s dessert include Paul buying something, smothered in chocolate, from the gourmet grocery store’s bakery.)

SO! Chocolate-dipped mallows I can do, maybe even for breakfast. And while we’re on the subject of clever, tasty treats, check out Elizabeth Foss’ suggestion right here.

(I’ve noticed all my posts of late have been about Valentine’s Day. What can I say? I’m a sucker for love. Also, I’m trying to get an award for most love-oriented posts in a single week.)

Chocolate Tangerine Semifreddo

If you happen to be stumped for a truly wonderful dessert for Christmas or parties during the Octave, here’s one I stumbled across last year.

It drew raves at our annual Christmas Eve dinner, and it’s not at all hard even if it has several steps.

I used fluted loaf pans to mold the semifreddo and they turned out beautifully. You could probably use a mold like this, too.  One serving tip: let it thaw slightly. Too cold and you can’t taste the tangerine. Here’s the link to the recipe with step-by-step photo instructions.
