Oh Downton Abbey!

how I love thee

Was anyone else counting down the days to the premiere of Downton Abbey, Season 2 this past Sunday? What is it that makes this show so irresistible?

Last year, we stumbled across the weekly drama on PBS one evening, and I was hooked. I had been seeing little comments here and there about the show, but never paid much attention. Then I watched five minutes and I am now a devoted fan. Oh Lord Grantham,... READ MORE

Of Fairies, Shakespeare, and John the Baptist

Daria's Players

Our homeschool group is putting on a one-hour version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream this Saturday, missing by only one day the traditional Midsummer’s Night, which in medieval days was celebrated not on the 21st, but on June 24th, the feast of the birth of St. John the Baptist. Luke 1:26 suggests that John was born six months before Jesus, hence the timing of this feast.

Sometimes called “the summer... READ MORE

Shakespeare in the Summertime

All The Deck's a Stage!

This week, I am hosting our annual drama camp at the house. This year, we’ve got about 20 players putting on a revised production of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing.

As always, it’s been totally exhausting. And totally fun.

I’ve written about our summertime drama camp experiences here before:

H-2-Uh-Oh

an informal poll

Out of curiosity: how many of you have actually ever had your water break? In a public place? With great fanfare?

I have not, never with any of my children. But I’ve just been wondering lately how often this really happens. And also reminding myself that the odds are very slim that this will occur.

Drama Camp How-To

How I handled last week

A few different people have asked some questions about the Drama Camp I hosted at my house last week, so I thought I’d write up a little description of it in case anyone else out there is interested in attempting the same kind of project.

I’ve only done this for two years now and I have ... ummmm ... exactly NO drama experience, so I am hardly an expert, But I can tell you what I did. So here goes:... READ MORE

Oliver!

I came here to post something today and, although I’ve got a few minutes to write before my “players” arrive for another afternoon of play practice, I’ve got nothing for you.

My brain is just too filled with our drama camp goings-on and preparing my young Oliver Twist for his starring role. I’ve also got a Bill Sikes, a Nancy, a Mrs. Bedwin, and a couple of random orphan boys to prepare as well.

So I’ll have to fill you in on all the dramatic details afterwards, and all you get today is this picture. But that’s not so bad. Don’t tell him I said so, but I think my little orphan is pretty cute.

Oh, the Drama!

I get a dose of it in the summertime

This week I’m hosting a summer “Drama Camp” at my house.

I call it “camp” because that makes it sound more exciting, but really it’s just me with a mess of kids practicing a play Monday through Friday with a live performance planned for Saturday.

Last year, we did Cyrano de Bergerac and it was tons of fun, so I felt confident leaping into Oliver Twist this year.

One thing I particularly enjoy about... READ MORE

The Audition

When the director called my name, my neck prickled with sweat. It was time to sing.

By Robyn Lee

“All the world’s a stage,” said William Shakespeare. Now I know what he means.

Some people ease into a new hobby by knitting or learning to draw. But I wanted to take up acting. So I figured that emailing a big-name theater and asking if they could recommend an amateur-friendly community theater was a reasonably modest start.

When the producer emailed me back that same day and encouraged... READ MORE

Support

When Dan offered to make a stage curtain for our recent outdoor production of Cyrano de Bergerac, I happily accepted his help.

I was thinking of something like an old bedspread on a clothesline. Funny. It’s almost as if I don’t know the man to whom I am married.

Naturally, he was thinking more along the lines of power tools, a towering wooden frame, and an enormous green tarp hanging from heavy cord... READ MORE

A Stage I’m Going Through

As if my life needs more drama.

This week I’m holding a Drama Camp here at the house. Never mind that I have no theatrical experience, I happen to be one of the only mothers among our circle of friends who is not currently pregnant, postpartum, or nursing. I get the job.

Dozens of children arrive every day for play practice and I am proud to say we are making decent progress. I think I have finally convinced our 13-year-old Cyrano... READ MORE
