Mr. Zuckerberg's Ovation

The governor of NJ, mayor of Newark and founder of Facebook turned up on Oprah the other day.

They were there to talk about an exciting bipartisan partnership to improve public schools.

That’s worth knowing about in its own right, but not what actually caught my attention in this video.

Watch the whole thing for context (and you can find part two here), but the striking moment for me begins at... READ MORE

Leave the Suitcase in the Closet

How do you feel about the "staycation"?

Today is Monday, but it feels like Saturday.

To be exact, it feels like Saturday after a really long week.

My husband was out of town from dawn on the Friday before last until late this past Saturday night. He was working long hours, mostly out of cell-phone range.

Nine days of that (on top of two week-long trips he took in August) gave me a new respect for military wives.

Here’s the good part:... READ MORE

Fertility Taxes

Here’s an interesting take on tax policy: its effect on birth rates.

I know there’s no fiscal consensus among us, and taxes might not be the thing to think about on one of the last Friday afternoons of summer.

But I think you will like the last line at least:

Whatever the details, policies should have a pro-family bias because parenting is… “one of the most important services any American can perform.”

Casual Fridays - Wavers: Love Them or Hate Them?

This week's career post looks at an increasingly popular second job - the "Roadside Marketer"

Around my house, we call them “human billboards” and they jury is split on their merit.  I will admit to hating them—and even to refusing to do business with anyone who employs them.  My sons, on the other hand, think they are cool “entrepreneurs” and wouldn’t hesitate to do this type of work that is said to pay pretty well.  This little video gave me a slightly different perspective:

Honestly, I... READ MORE

Update From Faith & Family Magazine

a note to our subscribers

Many readers have been asking about the September/October issue of Faith & Family magazine, and understandably so – because none of you received one.

This summer, the same kinds of pressures that have recently closed several secular publications caught up with Faith & Family.

Financially, we were unable to print and mail the September/October 2009 issue of the magazine on or even close to schedule,... READ MORE

Crocs: Love 'em or Hate 'em?

A frivolous query for Friday!

A friend’s Twitter post yesterday pointed me to this Washington Post article predicting the demise of the ubiquitous foot fashion:  Crocs.  The article author points to the financial doom and gloom facing the company in light of the current economic downturn:

Who needs a second pair of Crocs in a recession, particularly when the first pair is holding up just fine?

Reading the article sent me upstairs... READ MORE

Work-Life Balance Out of Whack

Have economic downturns caused your family's work-life balance to change?

While reading my local paper this week, I ran across this article by “Working Dad” columnist Paul Nyhan.  The column’s premise is that as the economy causes hardships on American families, the always precarious balance between career and home life gets shifted even more in the favor of employers and against families.

Nyhan quotes an expert who shares that during such times of rising unemployment,... READ MORE

Homemade Stock

Magical liquid of the kitchen

There are lots of liquids that are wonderful to have in the kitchen, but for a low ratio of cost and effort to taste-per-ounce, one of my absolute favorites is homemade poultry stock.

A good turkey or chicken stock made on your own stove tastes noticeably better than canned stock or broth, and there are lots of ways to use it.

Homemade stock makes gravy into something special.  It forms an excellent... READ MORE
