Where Do Heroes Come From?

With the first edition of Says You (About Bullies) --and Danielle’s follow-up-- under our belts, I want to push the discussion of how we train our kids to react to danger a little bit further.
I think the movie Titanic is one of the most pernicious films ever made (bear with me, I’m building to a point). One of the pastors at our parish dubbed it “Sex On A Boat” and suggested when the Leo DiCaprio... READ MORE
Old-Fashioned Education
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Family on Friday, September 05, 2008
Like I mentioned last week, I’m working my way through the Little House books. One thing I’m noticing is this: education sure was different back then.
On the first day that Laura and Carrie go to school in their new town in The Long Winter, the teacher reads the twenty-third psalm to start the day. “Of course Laura knew all the psalms by heart,” the text says, and my eyebrows shot up. Of course... READ MORE
Why Math Rocks

Since our discussion about education, I’ve been thinking about an aspect of the topic that is dear to my heart.
I feel very strongly about this:
Math and science are awesome for everyone.
The small Catholic liberal arts college from which I graduated required that all students take one semester of mathematics and two semesters of science as part of the core curriculum, acknowledging that a true... READ MORE
College Fair Fun

This week, I had the joy of representing my alma mater, the University of Notre Dame, at our local county college fair. It was an eye opening experience!
As a local Alumni Schools Coordinator for Notre Dame, my job is to greet students, distribute literature, and answer questions about non-specific situations. I don’t make admissions decisions or have any sway on whether or not a student is admitted. ... READ MORE
Back To School Night

I’ve just returned from back-to-school night at our local parish school. Though it’s a quick walk --mere blocks away-- it’s a long night if you have multiple kids in school.
We begin in the chapel, which is where Sr. Principal feels safest delivering her annual, “Parents are the first teachers” lecture, which is always lovely and inspiring --but sometimes a little bittersweet in the sense that there... READ MORE
His Path

For the past few days, I’ve been traveling in the Midwest, visiting with my family in Chicago and taking in the Notre Dame vs. Stanford football game. I thought I’d take the next few days to share a few reflections with you from these adventures.
One of the primary purposes for the trip was to begin the process of looking at colleges with our 17 year old Junior, Eric. And what greater place to... READ MORE
Meeting Teachers

The leaves changing colors on the trees in my backyard and the points on the “No. 2” pencils growing a bit dull are primary indicators that the time for annual parent teacher conferences at Adam’s elementary school are at hand. I’ll be the first to admit that I am one of those parents who gets a bit anxious at the prospect of sitting down with my kids’ teachers. It’s silly really, as both boys are... READ MORE
Tools For Re-Evangelization

One positive and nearly universal response I’ve seen to the election results is a Catholic commitment to get serious about re-evangelization and pro-life education.
Here are some exciting new projects I’ve stumbled across recently that might interest you for their nimble, “hip” (for lack of a better term) and non-threatening approach.
1. Catholics Come Home. Perhaps like me you saw some of the... READ MORE
Do You Know America?

Here’s a fun little exercise as we approach our national civic holiday, Thanksgiving.
As we thank Our Lord for the blessings of liberty among so many others, do we know how our civic liberty is maintained?
Try your hand at this 33-question civic literacy quiz.
71% of Americans can’t pass it --and don’t snicker, but elected officials actually do worse than the general public.
Guess what else... READ MORE
