EXTRA hope for pro-lifers as new House convenes

The words “hope” and “pro-life” go together. By nature, being a pro-lifer means we see the beauty and uniqueness of every individual. We see the designed-by-God perfection in each human being. And if that isn’t embracing hope, I don’t know what is.

But sometimes it is discouraging to look around and see a nation weighed down too often by anti-life sentiment and legislation. It doesn’t fit with our... READ MORE

An Almost Perfect Moment

the glory and tragedy of this election
AP photo/ Carlos Barria/Reuters

I grew up in a black neighborhood in Southeast Washington, DC.

We were the only young white family for blocks in any direction. It was a middle class neighborhood and we all shared the same values, so there were never any difficulties to speak of.

But if you have never had the experience of being the only one day after day who looks like you on your bus or in your school or walking down your street... READ MORE

Our President

from Tom Hoopes

Tom Hoopes, executive editor of the National Catholic Register and editorial co-director of Faith & Family, offers words of hope and some important reminders at the National Catholic Register blog today.

On this historic and emotional day, I think his words are important enough to cross post here:

Whether the election turned out the way we wanted or not, one thing is clear: Barack Obama will be the... READ MORE

Election Day

Are you watching the coverage tonight? Or does it make you too nervous?

While driving this afternoon, I heard a reading of Walt Whitman’s poem, Election Day 1884, on the NPR show Here and Now.

I love how it compares the power of the voting masses with some of our nation’s greatest natural wonders. I thought that on this historic day, you might appreciate the imagery too.

If I should need to name,... READ MORE

Election Freebies Update

I posted yesterday about Starbucks offering a free cup of coffee to voters.

Since then, I’ve heard about many other companies offering similar freebie incentives.

But hey, guess what? It’s totally illegal. At least in Georgia.

How about you? Did you get a felony freebie today?

Real Hope

I needed a reminder

I imagine I’m not the only person who’s felt ready for this election to be over.

I’m convinced that exercising our civic responsibility in the political arena is one important part of doing our duty as Christians to love God and those around us.  I’ve invested in this election, praying and making my decisions carefully.  I care about the outcome of today.

Perhaps, however, I let myself get a little... READ MORE

Free Coffee for Voting

Starbucks gets out the vote

Perhaps Starbucks isn’t trying to encourage pro-life votes with their “Free Coffee for Voters” campaign. But if you watch this clip with pro-lifers in mind, I think it’s an important reminder. With a bonus of free coffee.

When Will You Vote?

Are you joining the bandwagon of early voters?

My mother called the other day to share with me that she had just come from voting early in her home state of Mississippi, where folks over 65 are permitted to vote early for any reason.  Her call reminded me of a local columnist here in Fresno who wrote that he, too, had exercised his right to vote early because he was suffering from “Voter Fatigue” and wanted to mentally tune out the election madness.... What Exactly Will FOCA DO?

an interview with Susan Wills of the USCCB

Susan E. Wills is the Assistant Director for Education & Outreach for the Committee on Pro-Life Activities of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Here is an interview she gave to The Westchester Institute about the Freedom of Choice Act, which Sen. McCain opposes and Sen. Obama has promised to sign as his first presidential act.

First, a little history:

Wills: FOCA has been introduced... READ MORE
