Daily Readings & Homilies in Your Inbox

Meet my dear friend!

This is my friend Fr. Augustine Measures, OSB, whom I met online over five years ago.

I stole this photo from his Facebook page. Isn’t he just perfectly awesome? I would say handsome, but I don’t want to embarrass him.

A Benedictine monk, Fr. Augustine lives in the U.K. and he has always had a special place in his heart for Catholic families. He calls me at home occasionally, and I am always charmed by this loving priest’s thoughtfulness and spiritual care for moms and their families.

One of the ways Fr. Augustine provides that spiritual care for families is through the daily recordings he makes of the readings and his homilies at Mass. Even at 83 years old, this retired priest is undaunted by technology. He makes digital recordings of his homilies and shares them with an email list daily.

He told me he knows many moms and others aren’t able to get to daily Mass and it makes him happy to provide this service for them. If you would like to receive these recordings daily via email, please .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) and ask to be put on his list. You will be glad you did!

You've Got (Too Much) Mail

How do you deal with an overflowing inbox?

I’m happy to be at home, seated in my lovely office after nearly two consecutive weeks of wonderful Catholic travel.  Hugs from my three men and a night in my own bed are the best welcome in the world.  I woke up this morning, ready to take on the day.

And then I logged into my Gmail account, checked Twitter, popped on to Facebook, and felt like going back to bed.

Wow, the stacks of virtual “to do”... READ MORE

Does the Internet Affect Your Prayer Life?

Fr. James Martin Makes a Point

First of all, can I just say how happy I am to see Fr. James Martin writing for the Huffington Post? His words are always a breath of fresh air to this mom who finds most other entries there discouraging, if not disturbing, to Catholic thinkers.

His latest, Does E-Mail Make It Harder to Pray? How the Digital Age Is Changing Spiritual Life, is no exception.

There’s been a lot of online talk about the... READ MORE

Ball and Chain

Are you a chronic checker?

Via Jen, I recently came across a list of surprising energy drains and Energy Zapper Number 1 is: being addicted to email!

I go in and out of having email addiction. My phone now sends and receives email which is actually nice because I no longer have that urge to check the computer the minute I walk in the door. It used to be I would rush back to the screen to make sure I wasn’t missing out on anything... READ MORE

What Would You Say to Yourself?

Write a letter to your future self

I find this fascinating. At FutureMe.org you can write an email to yourself and then set it to be delivered at some future date of your choosing.

What would you tell yourself a year from now? Or 2, 5, or 10 years from now? What would you want to remember?

If you’re not the writing kind, you can eavesdrop on others’ correspondence by browsing through the anonymous but public notes published on the site (On second thought, I am removing the direct link to that section. I think they just publish anything people happen to post and some of it is a little too “open” for F&F standards.)

I like to think it’s because I’m a former sociology major that these kinds of things fascinate me. Not just that I’m nosy.

Red Envelope Brigade

just in time for Valentine's Day

This morning in my inbox was one of those mega-forwarded emails, the kind where you have to scroll way down to the bottom to get the gist of the letter. I sometimes ignore these emails, but something about this particular letter caught my eye—it promoted a simple yet profound act we can do to speak up for life.

I’ll include the letter below, but first I want to add that I did a little research to... READ MORE

New Media

When you let your 6 year old set up an email account where he can “practice” this is the kind of thing you can expect to find in your inbox:

hey mama, there is a spider on your foot.
