Parenting Empathy

Where did you find yours?

One of the lessons I’ve learned since becoming a parent: judging is dangerous. Many times I have inwardly shaken my head and thought I would never do that and inevitably I’ve later found myself in a situation where I understood exactly why someone would do that, whatever it was. I’ve felt sheepish every time.

For example, until just recently I thought those child-leashes were ludicrous. Why would... READ MORE

Help Me Take the Plunge

Know about eating wheat- or dairy-free?

The two times I’ve posted about my sinus problems, commenters have mentioned that a wheat-free dairy-free diet has given sinus relief them or to people they know.

I’m intrigued.

I love bread and other wheat products. I eat cheese and other dairy every day. It would be hard to give them up. But my sinus pain is so bad and so constant that I think I’d be willing to try it if it would help. At the very... READ MORE

Old Married Couple

how do you get to be one?
(Globe Photos / Ellen Harasimowicz)

“Old married couple” isn’t necessarily complimentary.

You don’t want to be caught bickering like one.

There’s a nice feature in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal, however, in which several couples whose marriage has passed the test of time offer tips.

I’m not certain I want to pattern my love on the Osbourne family (among others), but I was touched by Sharon Osbourne’s main reason for not leaving... READ MORE

Eating Out Again

A first-year milestone

On January 3, 2009, my husband and I went out for a fancy dinner. I was eight months pregnant, and as we ate delicious fondue he mentioned that it would be a while before we’d get another chance to have a really nice meal out together. I’m an optimist, so I thought it might not be so long. He’s a realist, and he predicted that it would be one year.

Although we’ve had a few short meals at nearby chain... READ MORE

Finding God in Infertility

An article worth reading

Infertility is not often a much-talked-about topic in the Catholic community.

Based on the responses I’ve gotten the times I’ve written about it here at Faith & Family, though, I think there are many of us who’ve been touched by fertility struggles.

Recently I got an email from a reader of my personal blog who’s going through infertility herself. While responding to her, I went looking for an article... READ MORE

Retro Eating

What are the favorite foods of your childhood?

I’ve been on a quest recently to persuade my two-year-old that she really wants to eat macaroni and cheese from a box with cut-up hot dogs in it.

She remains unconvinced.  She likes the two foods separately, but is suspicious of the idea of them together.

It’s not that I have a strong desire for her to eat mac-and-cheese with hot dogs.  I just want to make it so that I can eat it and relive my childhood.... READ MORE

Birth, Birth, Birth

What's your experience?

I’ve been thinking a lot about birth lately.  I’ve been writing the story of my son Blaise’s birth on my own blog (it begins here) and as I mentally relive the experience, it’s brought the topic to the front of my mind.

I used to be uninterested in birth.  My mom - who gave birth six times, four of them at home - liked to read books about birth and midwifery and all things related, and I couldn’t... READ MORE

Unique, Baby

The parenting lesson I had to learn

I don’t want to count chickens, but it appears that God might have answered our prayer.

Our little Blaise has started sleeping three- or four-hour stretches at night.  He is twelve weeks old today, and this is something his sister did not accomplish until she was twelve months old.

We may have gotten a good sleeper!

Aside from being grateful for the extra rest, I’m happy about Blaise’s sleeping habits... READ MORE

In My Shoes

A Catholic life in China

This is another installment of our feature that highlights an out-of-the-ordinary perspective on life as a Catholic mom. Today, we hear from Jen Ambrose, who lives with her husband and two young children in China. Read what she discovered about living a Catholic life in that country.

When my husband accepted a job that would take him to Shenzhen, China, I knew it wouldn’t be like any other previous... READ MORE

Anticipation/Apprehension

Looking forward to a new baby

Since our new baby is due around the beginning of February, we have just approximately two months to go until he is born.

This gives us two months to convince Camilla that we are not going to name him “Sister,” which I’m not sure we’ll be able to do, since she is very insistent that that must be his name.  Almost as insistent as we are that it is *absolutely not* going to be his name.  I guess she’s... READ MORE
