Talking Truth

Jennifer Fulwiler, who recently witnessed a horrific accident, writes at her NC Register blog about seeing a Catholic counselor to help her process her traumatic experience. She had doubts - would therapy be “misused as a replacement for prayer and trust in God”? - but explains in her piece how she overcame those doubts, and how seeing a counselor is helping her heal.
As someone who has greatly benefitted... READ MORE
The Outdoors Problem

Ah, spring, when a young man’s thoughts turn to love, and a mother’s - at least this mother’s - turn to sending the kids outside to play already, because we’ve been cooped up in this house all winter and it is making me CRAZY.
Ahem.
Jen Fulwiler’s recent piece about the necessary evil of the McMansion got me thinking about the idyllic days of my childhood. No, seriously - allow me a moment to reminisce,... READ MORE
Family Restaurant

Before our daughter was born, we used to eat in restaurants all the time. And - although it seems crazy to me now - after she was born, we kept it up at almost the same rate.
As soon as Milla (who’d been a colicky newborn) could make it through a meal without scream-blasting the eardrums of those around us, we started taking her out to eat at family-friendly places. It got easier as she aged, and... READ MORE
Whither Weather?

On Groundhog’s Day my husband joked that the little guy came out of his hole and declared that winter had already been over for six weeks.
Anyone else feel like the season is missing this year? Here in Michigan, we usually get buried by at least a couple snowstorms each year, and have a week or two of single-digit temperatures. Those things have not happened this winter. We’ve had rain instead, and... READ MORE
Difficult Discussion

This weekend for the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, our parish is having its usual prayer vigil. We signed up for a half-hour time slot. Bryan’s going and I suggested he might take our five-year-old daughter with him.
But I wasn’t surprised when he hesitated. Because, you see, we haven’t explained to Camilla about abortion yet.
We did participate in the local pregnancy care center’s fill-a-bottle-with-coins... READ MORE
Nick that Name

Do you have a nickname? Did you choose it?
Perhaps because my name has no easy nicknames and I’ve always just gone by “Arwen,” I’m fascinated by the topic of nicknames.
A few years ago I mentioned that we called my daughter Camilla “Billa,” a nickname we certainly hadn’t planned on when we carefully chose “Camilla Claire” before her birth.
But sometime around age three, “Billa” disappeared and we... READ MORE
Which Came First?

We had a chicken costume in 3-6 months size, and we have two babies, so what could we do but make an egg?
Actually, I wasn’t planning on dressing the babies up at all, since basic non-frivolous tasks take all my energy these days. Kids demand costumes, but babies don’t care, so why bother?
But we only have two babies once. One chance to make a hilarious double costume so we can enjoy the photos for... READ MORE
Stacking Tasks

With two little ones who are not yet three months old, it’s pretty much all baby, all the time around here. I keep trying to think of other things to blog about but I keep coming back to this: TWO babies. My mind is infant-fuzzy right now.
One of the things I find really hard about the early months is the task of working out a routine. I don’t use a schedule - I hate feeling like the clock is bossing... READ MORE
Babies Crazy May

When I woke this morning and realized it is June, I breathed a sigh of relief.
On May 1st, I got up and said to my husband, “This will probably be the month we have the babies!” I had no idea what a crazy month it would be.
The wild ride began on May 2nd, when I was 33 weeks exactly, with a visit to labor & delivery triage that gave us our first indication the twins might be coming sooner rather than... READ MORE
Pregnancy Fatigue

My husband and I were getting in the car. I made an “oof” sound as I climbed into my seat, and he glanced at me sympathetically. “I bet you’re ready to be done being pregnant now, huh?”
What? “Of course not! I’m only 30 weeks! It’s way too early for these babies to be born.”
After a pause, I realized he didn’t mean he wants me to give birth now, just that he imagines I’m starting to think fondly of... READ MORE
