"You Yourselves Give Them Something To Eat"

If you haven’t read Matthew Archbold’s ”$3 Lesson in Christianity,” do so!

It’s a lovely short story that happens to be true, with something for everyone: fine writing, gentle humor, a nice lesson that doesn’t hit you over the head.

And a surprisingly eloquent hot dog.

This week on the Faith & Family Live Cast (click here to listen or click on the player above), Elizabeth, Sarah and I share a topic inspired by my recent “unplugging” for a moms’ retreat. Together, we look at the tricks and treats related to becoming less “wired” and share our own struggles and experiences. Have you managed to find any downtime yet this summer? Have you “unplugged” much yet, as a... READ MORE

Sight-Seeing With God

papal tips for a meaningful vacation

Benedict XVI is good about reminding us that our bodies and souls need periodic rest.

Here are three papal tips for a genuinely restorative vacation.

1. Use vacation time to restore and renew your relationships, especially your relationship with God. Be with each other as a family, and take the time to be with God in prayer.

2. Consult the two “books” of revelation. Tuck a Bible into your luggage... READ MORE

The Mission of Older Moms

Easing into a new role...

I was feeling old this morning as a hot flash woke me at 5:23 and I realized there was no hope of going back to sleep. It’s ironic that once our children finally start sleeping in, our bodies seem to get to the point where sleep is less normal. I took advantage of my early start to head to our very early morning Mass, the one reserved for the truly saintly people at my parish (or at least that’s what... READ MORE

Tiny New Catholics

We celebrate our babies' baptism

When Linus and Ambrose were four weeks old, we had them baptized.

For me, it was definitely the most joyous day of their lives so far - even better than the day we brought them both home from the NICU.

Ceremonies don’t usually make me weepy. I laughed with joy through my own wedding. Baptisms are the one exception to that.

Near the beginning of the rite when the celebrant says to the baby, “I claim... READ MORE

Please Pray With Us for All Priests

a novena for our priests

In the comments on this recent post, StephC made the excellent suggestion that perhaps now would be a good time for us to pray as a community for all of our priests.

I am happy to get us started doing just that. I hope you will join us in praying a novena for priests here at Faith & Family Live. I will post daily reminders for the nine days of prayer. Together, let us pray a novena prayer for our... READ MORE

Have Mercy

I am going just a leetle nuts today with getting all in order for our weekend trip to the National Shrine of Divine Mercy for the Mercy Sunday celebration.

For those who will be at the shrine, I will be giving a talk about “Forgiveness in the Family” at 10:55 am. For anyone who might be interested in watching my live interview on EWTN, that will air a little before 12:30 pm EDT, and you can watch live online.

Wish me luck!

Looking for Catholic College Stories

For our upcoming college guide in Faith & Family magazine, we are hoping to highlight not only “the usual” Catholic colleges, but we want to also share a different list of schools as well. These will include some colleges that are returning to their Catholic identities as well as some non-religious schools that are “faith-friendly” and have resources and opportunities for kids to grow in their Catholic...
