An Apple A Day

an Autumn potpourri

My boys don’t always get around to eating an entire apple, and somedays I will find a few half-eaten Fuji’s resting around my kitchen counters.

The perfect solution (besides trying to track down the offending party and telling him to finish this apple!) is to cut up the remaining, oft dried-out fruit and throw into a saucepan of water. Add to that a few sticks of cinnamon and you have the perfect... READ MORE

Apple Time Is Here!

Culinary Wednesday

You can tell you’re in the Sockey home in September through November by sense of smell alone.

Apples are bound to be on the menu in some form or another several days a week. My top three are apple pie, apple crisp, and apple sauce. Apples will also appear in salads, and now and again I serve Fried Apples ‘n’ Onions as a side dish, in homage to Laura Ingalls Wilders’ very hungry Almanzo in Farmer... READ MORE

Where's the Sun Gone?

Share your ideas for brightening dark evenings

When I was a young adult I loved “fall back” because it gave us an extra hour of sleep one Saturday night.

As a mother I dread it for two reasons.

First, little ones don’t pay any attention to what the clock says, so a toddler who normally rises at 6:00am will think that 5:00 is the new proper time to wake up. No extra hour of sleep for his parents!

Second, the end of Daylight Saving Time means the... READ MORE

Fall is in the Air

What do you love?

Is it fall where you live? It isn’t here, not quite. The evenings are getting a bit of chill, but the days are still a little on the scorchy side (scorchy with a nice breeze, though).

So, indulge me. What is your favorite part of fall? Let’s talk about it to help get us all excited about this most wonderful time of the year.

As for me, I’m excited about: making my favorite soups (vegetable and cheese!... READ MORE

September!

How I love you

There is something so magical and downright inspirational about September. I know it’s all about beginnings—it has forever meant the start of school, a return to structure, a fresh start. I love September and find I always have a renewed sense of purpose as we make our way into Fall (that glorious, glorious season!).

In the midst of celebrating September 1 today, I found myself singing this little... READ MORE

Gourds Be Gone

Away with thee!

I would like to take a moment to mourn the loss of my Fall decor. It’s like one minute there are gourds and maple leaves and handprint turkeys everywhere and the next they’re all suppose to just disappear.

Thanksgiving seems like the one celebration that must leave instantly. True I have months to decorate my home with all things Fall, but the day after Thanksgiving I better be ready to start putting... READ MORE

Fall Decor

celebrating the season

One of my favorite parts about this time of year is all the wonderful decorating a person can do—buy a bag of gourds at the grocery store and you can transform your front room into a Fall masterpiece!

I have been having fun adding little sprigs of color throughout the house, a few mini-pumpkins here, a harvest candle there. I still want to buy some mums for the front porch and I’ve got this idea for... READ MORE
