Tour The Basilica

It’s the Feast of the Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major today.

And it’s not too late to take a tour, as the Vatican website now offers incredible virtual tours of all the Papal Basilicas.

Corned Beef

Is it what's for dinner?

Just a quick bloggy poll as you take a break from your St. Pat’s Celebrations or preparations: how many of you are making corned beef and cabbage for dinner? Is this your family tradition? Any other good Irish fare on the menu?

In our fair city, St. Patrick’s Day is a huge celebration. There is a parade downtown (though the weather right now isn’t looking too friendly). If it doesn’t rain, we’ll go... READ MORE

Pancake Day

it's Breakfast for Dinner night

While Danielle’s crew enjoyed a fancy feast for breakfast, we’re doing breakfast for dinner. For as long as I can remember, I’ve served up heaping towers of pancakes for dinner on Fat Tuesday—a feast before the fast. We haul out the syrup and the butter and I also add whatever extra ingredients people desire (namely: chocolate chips) to their flapjacks.

Historically, the idea of having pancakes the... READ MORE

Recipes for Fall Feasts

sharing the wealth

In my recent post about our upcoming Oktoberfest, Tiffany asks:

“Would you be willing to share what is on your menu for your Oktoberfest? It sounds like it would be a fun way to celebrate fall!”

It sure is and I sure will. Our Oktoberfest is a traditional gathering of friends and family. We carve pumpkins, play horseshoes, drink beer, and give the kids lots of cotton candy and other treats.

Dan’s... READ MORE

Feast of Corpus Christi

from today's Gospel

And as they were eating, he took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. And he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. Truly, I say to you, I shall not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink... READ MORE

Come Holy Spirit

How was the Novena?

A belated Happy Feast of Pentecost!

For the nine days before Pentecost, our family observed the Novena to the Holy Spirit (which Sr. Patricia posted each day here). It was a wonderful experience, and while some of our prayer intentions were more long-term petitions, I am confident our Novena was a “success” simply in the beautiful way it brought our family together each evening.

I’m curious to know how many readers did the Novena, and what fruit you saw (if you’d like to share). Someone emailed to say she had prayed for Henry one day of the Novena. That really blessed me; I was humbled to think of a family offering those same prayers we said that day—with my little infirm in mind. Thank you, dear reader!

Receive the Holy Spirit

from today's Gospel

Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”
—John 20:21-22

What Are The Odds?

What is the word?

On C-Span this morning, I caught a few minutes of Hillary Clinton’s confirmation hearing for Secretary of State.

Later on, as I was doing a few minutes of devotional reading, I noticed that today was the feast of St. Hilary.

I’ll admit I had forgotten that St. Hilary was a man, and upon further research have discovered he was “a gentle and courteous man, devoted to writing some of the greatest theology on the Trinity…”

But I keep trying to come up with the word for this occurrence of Hillary being sworn in on the feast of Hilary. I guess I’d call it a coincidence? Or maybe just random. Or perhaps cosmic.

Can you think of a fitting word?

Free from Sin

A feast of hope in a season of hope

Today during his homily, our pastor mentioned that the Church’s teaching is that although the Blessed Virgin Mary was conceived without original sin, she was still capable of committing actual sins during her life.  It’s just that by the grace of God she managed to resist temptation.

We tend, our pastor mentioned, to think of Mary as someone completely other than ourselves: perfect, while we are mere... READ MORE
