Help Me Take the Plunge

The two times I’ve posted about my sinus problems, commenters have mentioned that a wheat-free dairy-free diet has given sinus relief them or to people they know.
I’m intrigued.
I love bread and other wheat products. I eat cheese and other dairy every day. It would be hard to give them up. But my sinus pain is so bad and so constant that I think I’d be willing to try it if it would help. At the very... READ MORE
Eat It How?

Back when I had more free time, I loved reading archived columns by Miss Manners online. Much of my own behavior is not “painfully correct” but I enjoyed the etiquette maven’s quick wit and I learned a lot, too.
My favorite pieces of manners trivia are the ones that make me go, “Who knew?” because they’re archaic or contrary to our instincts about what the rules *should* be.
For example, do you know... READ MORE
Bulbs You Can Bite

A friend of mine asked if I have a good beans and rice recipe. I do, and I happen to know it off the top of my head, so she grabbed a pen and I started reciting it. “Chop an onion, heat some oil in a pan, and saute the onion in it.”
As I told her the rest of the recipe it occurred to me that at least half of my entree recipes start this way. Almost daily, I find myself beginning dinner prep by sauteing... READ MORE
Rice is Nice

When I mentioned “beans and rice for Lent” in my post yesterday, I was using it figuratively to refer to penitential eating in general.
But then reader Ashley mentioned in the comments that her family actually eats beans and rice on all forty days of Lent, and she piqued my interest.
One of our family Lenten resolutions this year is to squeeze our grocery budget as tightly as we can, and give the... READ MORE
Enjoying Innovation

I made rice crispy treats and minty brownies for the Super Bowl on Sunday, and in the process I got to use one of my favorite kitchen innovations: nonstick aluminum foil.
Are you familiar with this stuff? I grabbed it off the shelf at the grocery store once on a whim, and as soon as I tried it, I was hooked. At the time I was making my family’s favorite lemon bars often, and the filling had an awful... READ MORE
Special Crispy Treats

I know they’re not everyone’s thing, but I love rice crispy treats. Yes, they’re basically just cereal-studded pieces of chewy sugar, but they are *delicious* cereal-studded balls of chewy sugar. Also, as long as you work fast and you’re not picky about letting them cool completely, you can be eating them less than fifteen minutes after you decide to make them.
And if there are children out there... READ MORE
Make Your Own Gnocchi

Danielle’s recipe for mashed potato soup looks wonderful, and I’ve bookmarked it to try the next time we need a warm, comforting winter meal. (Soon.) Cheap, easy, and delicious is a trifecta that will draw me to a recipe every time!
But sometimes I like a challenge. Although I usually want meals to be easy to prepare, it can be fun to make slightly more time-consuming dishes, if the work-investment... READ MORE
Chocolate Monks

From the monastery of Piedra, a little history.
“a Cistercian monk who travelled with Hernán Cortés to Mexico, Brother Jeronimo of Aguilar, sent the first cocoa beans ever seen in Europe to the Abbot at Monasterio de Piedra, Antonio de Alvaro, together with a recipe for chocolate.
The monks at this monastery were therefore the first people in Europe to taste this delicacy, explaining the long tradition... READ MORE
Best Mac and Cheese

For as long as I can remember I’ve been on a quest for the perfect baked macaroni and cheese recipe. My mom makes one that is picky-eater friendly, but I wanted to have my own recipe in my file that fits my - and my family’s - personal preferences.
It’s taken me more than seven years of marriage to get there, but I think I’ve finally worked it out. I can make macaroni and cheese that makes my household... READ MORE
Finding January Joy

Thank you all so much for your comments on my post about winter! January is normally a depressing time for me and you inspired me to think positively about this cold month, and I’m grateful.
I had an exhausting Advent and I think that, too, is helping me feel better about January. Normally I’m let down after the celebration of Christmas ends and it’s time to go back to normal life. But this year December... READ MORE
