Loving without Labor

On Monday we had some friends over for dinner, newlyweds who will soon be moving across the country. When my husband invited them, he announced that we’d get take-out, since I’m constantly nauseated these days due to my first-trimester status.
Under normal circumstances I enjoy cooking for guests. Preparing food is fun for me and I relish my friends’ happy reactions to the food I’ve made. But... READ MORE
Meatloaf Rescue

“I have a totally zany request,” said the voice on the phone. It was a neighbor who moved in a couple of blocks away a few months ago. She was caught in traffic and wanted to know if it would be too much of an imposition to have me go to her home and rescue the meatloaf she’d left in the oven. Of course it wasn’t --I rather enjoyed my little adventure sneaking into her house (now I know the secret). Mostly I’m delighted she felt the confidence to ask; now I know we’re friends, not mere acquaintances.
What are the zaniest things you’ve asked --or been asked-- of your friends?

Early this summer, I did the unthinkable—I decided to give up Diet Coke. I know, I know—what was I thinking? It was tough, but I managed and believe it or not, I have now been over three months without a drink.
In the midst of that, a friend suggested I try sparkling mineral water as a substitute. At the time I was still reeling from my decision to just walk away from my dark master, so I didn’t... READ MORE
The Hang Out House

In response to my recent podcast with Marybeth Hicks, author of Bringing Up Geeks, I received a very interesting question from a mom.
The mom in question welcomes her teens’ friends into her home. She wants to be the “hang out house” and has an open door policy.
The problem is, she’s not quite sure how to handle kids who visit and don’t have the manners or behavioral standards of her own children. ... READ MORE

The weather has been absolutely Fall-like down here in Georgia today. Could it be that the oppresive heat of August is gone? Nah...probably not. But I’ll take what I can get for now!
These feelings of Fall have me thinking about blue jeans—when the weather does finally cool off, jeans becomes a wardrobe staple.
On the radio today, I heard an ad for a new pair of jeans. “I want a pair of jeans,”... READ MORE

Tonight I am having a bunch of neighbor lady friends over for some wild and crazy fun—a Menu Planning Party!
Can you think of anything you’d like to do more? I didn’t think so.
I know, maybe it sounds lame, but the truth is this: it’s going to be fun. Because I’m going to make it fun.
I realized recently that for me, planning a menu feels a lot like work. So I’m going to work to make it fun.... READ MORE
Friday Finds

A few weeks ago, my sister came home from the grocery store quite excited. While shopping, she had stumbled upon an incredible sale—her favorite high-efficiency laundry detergent for just $1.99.
She shared the news with me, and while we were taking a walk together, I heard her tell a friend and later tell her mother-in-law.
Good news is so fun to share!
It’s funny how simple little details can... READ MORE
