What to Eat When Mom's Away

I’m actually away from home as I write this, sharing a quick overnight visit with a friend. A rare treat for me, and probably a different sort of adventure for my family at home.
This time I did not have the foresight or organization to prepare a dinner for them ahead of time. No meatloaf or casserole was sitting in the fridge for them to warm up. Defrosting a package of hamburger was the extent... READ MORE
What Do You Put In These Things?

After putting on a very satisfactory July 4th barbecue, with leftovers to last much of the week, I’m really not feeling the need to try new recipes.
But here is something simple that might help some of us moms this summer ...
On my next trip to the dollar store, I’m going to pick up some popsicle molds and start experimenting. Back when all seven kids were at home, these molds were essential equipment. ... READ MORE
Better Than Ice Cream

This pretty little pint caught my eye in the supermarket freezer the other day.
It’s not ice cream, it’s gelato. I’ve never been to Italy, but with this available in my freezer, I’m thinking why bother?
Just kidding. But this stuff is delicious. It’s a little bit pricey (I paid $4.99 per pint), but I am now the proud owner of a pint each of Double Dark Chocolate and Caribbean Coconut that are reserved FOR GROWN-UPS ONLY in my freezer. One small scoop of each is a perfect pairing that makes me happier than a whole bowlful of that stuff the kids love ever could.
How about you? What’s your favorite warm weather treat so far this summer?

Is it just me or was frozen yogurt a thing of the 90s? I remember finding out (with delight) that you could eat this stuff that was almost as delicious as ice cream but way better for you.
I was excited to learn recently that we have a frozen yogurt shoppe in our fair city. My sister discovered (with delight) that a cute little place called Tutti Frutti has opened. It features soft-serve frozen yogurt... READ MORE
Coffee Granita From Your Freezer
Posted by Danielle Bean in Food on Monday, July 26, 2010
I like to experiment with refreshing treats in the summer. Imagine my delight, for example, a few years ago when I discovered that making a healthy, delicious, frozen treat was as simple as putting a bag of grapes in my freezer.
Voila! Frozen candy!
But sometimes I like to try things a little more complicated than that. This past week, my love of frozen confections and my passion for all things coffee... READ MORE
