On this week’s episode of the Faith & Family Live Cast (click here to listen or click on the player above), Elizabeth, Rebecca and I look at the topic of support our children’s spiritual journeys, especially through their teen years.  We discuss the importance of praying for our children, especially when they may begin to have serious questions about their own faith formation or place in the Church. ... Getting Our Hands Dirty

How my garden grows

Juliette and I picked up some plants yesterday and now my hard-working 10-year-old is putting my abandoned poor, pathetic herb garden to good use.

She is putting some herbs in there, for sure. But this girl opts for “decorative” gardening a lot more than her mother ever did. Even back when I kept up this small spot, I used to keep it filled with stuff I could use to season focaccia bread.

Gardening... READ MORE

Bragging Rites

the fruits of your labor

I am a firm believer that home grown tomatoes are how we know God loves us.

Last year I invited everyone to brag a little about their summer produce.

I invite you to do so again over the weekend. Include a link to your photos or blog post in your comments if you’re so inclined.

Home Grown Goodness

How does your garden grow?

Arwen’s post on cooking fresh veggies, along with my own delightful little backyard produce section, has me thinking about gardening and healthy eating and just living off the land in general.

This is our first year with a garden, something I have wanted for years but could never figure out where, exactly, one could thrive in my yard. When we put up a fence this Spring, voila!, the perfect patch emerged.... READ MORE

I'm a Strawberry Sensation

a lazy gardener reaps much fruit

Arwen’s post about summer produce gives me the perfect opportunity to brag about our strawberries.

We have strawberries!

I like to brag about our strawberries because, you see, I have nothing to do with our strawberries.

I had a garden years ago that I lovingly tended alongside my husband. I still hold onto the dream of a flourishing garden, but we probably won’t be raising many plants until we’re... READ MORE

How Does Your Garden Grow?

It's time to get busy planting in Central California

Apologies to those of you who may still be facing frigid weather in your part of the country as you read this!  But out here in Central California, it’s time to begin planning this spring’s garden.

On Sunday, the boys and I will head—hoes in hand—to our raised bed in the back yard and begin turning the soil and deciding what to grow.  Last year, our late start led to some pretty dismal results.  So... READ MORE

Bumper Crop

How do you prolong the tastes of summer?

Can someone tell me how it got to be mid-August so fast? So many big projects intended…and only one of them accomplished—which I guess means the kids & I have had a good summer, right? (Say “Right.”)  One project I’m resolved to accomplish between now and September is reining in a mutant crop of basil which is taking over my garden (even intimidating the mint, which is not a shy plant, as you gardeners... How Does your Garden Grow?

We have strawberries!

Thanks to Grandpa, we have strawberries. I say thanks to Grandpa, because if this particular project had been left up to me, I would just be getting around to opening up a gardening catalog right about now.

But Grandpa is good to me. He knows what a garden slacker I am, but is too polite to say so. Instead, he ordered the strawberries himself. He brought them over to our house along with the top soil... READ MORE

Raising Sowers

A timely object lesson helps bring home the message of the Gospel.

But the seed sown on rich soil
is the one who hears the word and understands it,
who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.

The timing wasn’t intentional, but couldn’t have been more fortuitous - about two weeks ago, my eldest son came out to the kitchen and said, “Mom, can I plant my own garden?”  Eric is almost seventeen, so his request for a garden wasn’t what I was expecting! ... READ MORE
