"You Yourselves Give Them Something To Eat"

If you haven’t read Matthew Archbold’s ”$3 Lesson in Christianity,” do so!
It’s a lovely short story that happens to be true, with something for everyone: fine writing, gentle humor, a nice lesson that doesn’t hit you over the head.
And a surprisingly eloquent hot dog.
Sharing Prayer
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Faith on Tuesday, March 01, 2011
Sometimes when my tiny twin boys are kicking me, I actually tear up thinking about how many people are praying for them.
To me, prayers are probably the biggest perk of being a blogger. My babies don’t deserve prayer more than any other babies, but they get it because so many kind, generous people know about their existence and wish the best for them. What a blessing that is!
Today, I’d like to share... READ MORE
Christmas Generosity

I love stories that remind me how kind and generous people can be.
I read a good one this morning, and hours later I’m still tearing up a little when I think of it.
A blogger made the generous gesture of offering $30 Amazon gift cards to the first twenty commenters who could tell her why they needed them. The cards went quickly, but in poured offers from readers to help provide gift cards for the... READ MORE
Mr. Zuckerberg's Ovation

The governor of NJ, mayor of Newark and founder of Facebook turned up on Oprah the other day.
They were there to talk about an exciting bipartisan partnership to improve public schools.
That’s worth knowing about in its own right, but not what actually caught my attention in this video.
Watch the whole thing for context (and you can find part two here), but the striking moment for me begins at... READ MORE
A Happy Bargain

My husband called this afternoon and told me that he was going to come home from work early, trade his car for my bigger one, and go out and pick up a surprise.
“A surprise?” I asked, thinking quickly about what large items could be exciting for me.
But the surprise wasn’t for me, he told me. It was for Camilla.
Ah! That explained his gleeful tone - my husband loves to delight his little girl.
Camilla... READ MORE
How to Thank the Pampering Angels

When my husband walked through the front door last night he had two huge gift baskets for me. Nope, they weren’t from him, though he was sweet enough to pick them up and deliver them to me.
The card inside read:
“In your delicate condition, we thought you would love some pampering, so here are two baskets filled with lots of goodies for your bath and palate - enjoy! Bon Appetit and Relax!
Love from... READ MORE
Giving Thanks

When I was growing up, every year on my birthday my mom would give me a pack of thank you cards as one of my gifts. This was her not-so-subtle way of reminding me to show gratitude, in the form of a written note, to any friends and family who had given me a present.
Her methods worked; to this day each of my siblings does an incredible job of sending thank you notes whenever I give a gift, including... READ MORE
Giving Too Much?

The responses to my “Helping Hands” post from Monday made me realize: wow, I was taking a simplistic view of this one!
This is one of the reasons I love writing here at Faith & Family, because our lovely readers so often introduce me to new points of view. When I write about a topic, I try to consider as many angles as possible, but I miss so many. When I wrote about stepping out of my comfort zone... READ MORE
Helping Hands

My sister stopped by briefly this morning to drop some stuff off, and I could see that she was upset. Her mouth was compressed, and I was sure that her eyes were red behind her sunglasses.
She brought a couple small items into the house and I ran out to grab the other item, a heavy box, out of her van. I peered at her boys in their car seats and immediately diagnosed the cause of my sister’s distress.... READ MORE
Our Moms' Special Day
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Family on Thursday, May 06, 2010
Since becoming a mother, I tend to think of Mother’s Day as “my” day.
I’m not proud to admit it, but I’ve lost sight of the fact that it’s my mom’s day, too. Not that I’ve completely forgotten to acknowledge it. I’ve just failed to put extra effort into making my own mother’s Mother’s Day something special.
I think of myself as being “in the trenches” of motherhood, while my mom - whose sixth and... READ MORE
