The Gift of Giving

Do you give to programs or charities at Christmas?

As evidenced by my late posting today, it’s been a doozy. I think when I designed this day in my head, I must have been either delusional, or distracted—or likely both!

Regardless, one of the “to do” items for my Feast of St. Nicholas agenda was to deliver our “Project Santa Giving Tree” donations to Church. Every year, our parish works in conjunction with the local Women’s shelter run by the Holy... READ MORE

Tithing Questions

How do you prefer to give to your parish?

Every Sunday, I sit in the pew at Mass feeling a bit sheepish when it’s time for the weekly collection. The devoted ushers at our parish, garbed in their fine navy blue matching sport coats, push the basket attached to the very long pole in front of me. Every week, I smile at them and keep my hands on my songbook, neglecting to drop anything into the basket. The usual usher in my section of the church... READ MORE

This week on the Faith & Family Live Cast (click here to listen or click on the player above), Rachel, Danielle and I enjoy a conversation about staying “sane” during this very busy time of the year.  How do you stay stress-free during the Christmas season? With decorations, shopping, cooking, visiting … how do you get it all done without going too crazy?

Fancy up your Christmas notes with this week’s... READ MORE

Lenten Calendar

Adding prayer, fasting, and almsgiving to each day.

I went over to my sister’s the other day and I noticed the kids’ Lenten calendars on the fridge. I glanced over the daily resolutions.

Handwritten, in each box were little sacrifices or good works: write letter to Pat, no Wii, make my bed, no computer, draw Aunt Robyn a picture (like the one shown here by my niece Fiona).

It reminded me of Lent growing up in my house.

Mom didn’t make dessert very... READ MORE

Secret Santa Solutions

Casual Fridays asks "What to buy for coworkers?"

I remember back when I worked in an office, I always sort of dreaded the annual “secret Santa” mania that surrounded gift exchange situations with co-workers. I would always spend a few weeks thinking about a gift that would be appropriate, desirable, and within the suggested price range.  I also had a “fun” time shopping for gifts for the employees I supervised.  Coming up with a “one size fits all”... The Spirit of Giving

Finding Christ on Prime Time

I just finished reviewing the Christmas special, “Yes, Virginia” which will be airing on CBS Friday, Dec. 11 at 8:00 pm (ET/PT). (Record it on your DVR and screen it first to find out if it is appropriate for your family).

I suspected the little detail of Christ’s birth would be avoided on prime time (and I was right). No mention of baby Jesus in a Christmas special is not only disappointing, but... READ MORE

Built to Last

Gifts that keep on giving

My husband and I are approaching our 15th wedding anniversary, and with that passage of time comes the passing of some of our beloved wedding gifts as well.

This week, for the first time in our married life, I bought a mattress pad. As I laundered the bed linens one recent morning, I realized that mattress pads were probably not meant to be paper thin. We were still using the one given to us as a... READ MORE

Faith and Family Readers Warm My Heart

an update to our Faith and Family giveaway

Well, I’ve always thought it, but this proves it. Faith and Family readers really are some of the nicest people on the planet.

After noting the popularity of the Faith and Family subscription giveaway, the super generous donors contacted me again and offered to give away 5 more gift subscriptions.

And that’s not all.

Next I heard from Christy, another reader who was touched by the number of people... READ MORE

The Eyes Have It

Some Extra-large Navel Gazing

Today the postman delivered a piece of mail from a name I didn’t recognize. I opened the envelope to find a picture of myself from exactly two years ago, back when I was a great big pregnant lady not too far off from giving birth.

The picture was taken at a diocesan conference where I was a guest speaker, taken by a woman who had been there. And here was the picture, many months later.

How interesting... READ MORE

Faith and Family Giving Campaign

Can you make a commitment to Faith and Family?
http://www.flickr.com/photos/kryten/125710155/

You have probably noticed a pop up ad for the Faith and Family fundraising campaign that sometimes appears when you open this site.

I hate pop up ads. I hate fundraising campaigns.

But these things are sometimes unavoidable.

Faith and Family Magazine and Faith and Family Live! are non-profit labors of faith and love. Subscriptions and advertising pay some of the bills, but not all of them.

Please take just a moment to read what Tom and April Hoopes share about our financial needs and, if you are able, please consider making a tax deductible donation to support our work here on the blog and at the magazine.
