The Gift of Time to Pray
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Faith on Thursday, July 21, 2011
Whenever I’m in a stressful period (like having newborn twins, hey!) I need to pray. And sadly, all that stress makes it harder than usual to find time to pray.
I often end up feeling stressed or like a failure because I haven’t fit prayer into my day, but it honestly never occurred to me that there’s a simple way I can help myself get the time: ask for it.

Oprah's Last Show

I watched the Oprah series finale this afternoon. Don’t ask me how I pulled it off—I haven’t been able to watch anything at four in the afternoon since my oldest boys were toddlers. But somehow the big boys were all gone and both babies asleep and there I sat, folding laundry and watching Oprah.
I’ll admit I used to watch Oprah way back then. I was on a big kick for a while and really did enjoy the... READ MORE
The Bunny's Angel

When I decided to major in theology in college, one of the reasons I did it was so that when my future children asked the hard questions, I’d be able to answer some of them.
I pictured solemn dinner table discussions about topics like Purgatory and the Beatific Vision. My kids would know exactly what “Oh happy fault!” means, and the difference between plenary and partial indulgences. I could teach... READ MORE
You Are Loved

When Paul and I were first newlyweds, I worked at the local newspaper. On Valentine’s Day, employees got the special perk of getting a free classified ad to pronounce our deepest emotions to our loved ones.
When it came time for me to fill out my little slot, as I reflected on everything I was feeling and thinking on my first married Valentine’s Day, I was overwhelmed. I couldn’t decide what to say.... READ MORE

Two years ago right now, newborn Blaise was in the hospital with RSV and I was struggling, big-time.
Having a sick child is never fun. Having an eight-pound infant hospitalized for a week and a half while you’re dealing with postpartum hormones is awful. It was supposed to be our babymoon, but I spent ten nights of it catching snatches of sleep in between comforting a newborn who couldn’t understand... READ MORE
It's Not About Me

I received a one-two punch in my morning reflections today. As the resident control freak in my house, I just love, love, love clarity.
Today’s Magnificat Gospel reflection by Elizabeth Leseur:
“Let us never look for the result of our efforts for others. It is good for us not to know it, for if we did, pride in doing good, the most subtle pride of all, might follow.”
Imitation of Christ (Chapter 47):... READ MORE
A Moment in Time

A moment in time
so quickly does fly,
here and then gone,
in the blink of an eye.
A moment in time
created for good,
so full of potential
to live as we should.
A moment in time
so what will YOU do
with this moment created
by God just for YOU?

Little Picture, Big Heart

For years my father has had a framed watercolor of a heart on his dresser. My younger sister was making it for him, but smudged it. Disappointed, she threw it away, but he rescued it and framed it.
I always like seeing the heart, which feels to me like a metaphor for the way Dad loves his children despite and through our weaknesses.
My father is a wise man, and he too draws a metaphor from the heart picture. He published the piece on his blog, and I found it both moving and true. You can read it here: “The Broken Heart”.
Hawking Nonsense

“Hawking says Science proves there is no God” read the headlines.
“Here we go again,” thought I.
I read the lengthy excerpt from the great physicist’s new book hoping for an intellectual challenge and found the same old thing: “Science” pretending to prove what “Science” cannot even speak about.
I use the scare quotes not to imply disrespect for scientists or scientific inquiry, or even for Mr.... READ MORE
How Big Is He?

We were waiting to go to confession before Mass, and it looked like the line was too long for everyone to make it through in time.
Then one of the parish’s deacons, already vested, came down the row, whispering to us. “Father has asked that when you go into the confessional, you just list your sins. Don’t waste time trying to explain them. Keeping it simple makes confession better, and quicker too.”... READ MORE
