Handling the Holidays
Posted by Rachel Balducci in Family on Tuesday, October 18, 2011
I’m working on an article for our magazine and have a question for you:
What one thing have you learned to help make the holiday season peaceful and sane?
In terms of dealing with relatives and the stress of all there is to do for loved ones, what simple method of “letting go and letting God” helps you get through this busy and joyful season feeling sane and happy?
Please leave your answer in the... READ MORE

God of liberty,
We acknowledge Your reign.
For the freedom of our land
For the rights we possess,
For the security of our laws,
We praise You and thank You.
Give guidance to our leaders
Watch over those
Who serve their country,
Raise up the poor,
And exalt the humble.
Make our nation great and strong,
Renowned in wisdom,
Prosperous in virtue,
And renewed in faith.
Destroy all signs of division:

An Introvert's Holiday
Posted by DariaSockey in Just me on Friday, May 13, 2011
A few days before Mother’s Day, I told my family, “Please don’t buy me flowers or cards. Don’t take me to brunch. Just hold down the fort for the day after we get back from Mass. Put some frozen pizzas in the oven when you get hungry. I want to go for a drive all by myself.”
The kids protested at first. After all, Dad (who was away on business) had called to help them brainstorm some nice ways to... READ MORE

Mini Valentine M&Ms? Check.
Chocolate milk? Check.
Boxes of Spiderman and Tinkerbell Valentines ripped open and spread all over the dining room table? Check.
Paints and brushes and soaked-through papers and masterpieces spread all over the dining room table? Check.
Plan for baking cupcakes this afternoon and a late steak dinner for two with wine? Check.
I must admit, after two weeks of nearly non-stop... READ MORE
Questions to Ask Before 2011
Posted by Danielle Bean in Family on Thursday, December 30, 2010
Whatever your plans for New year’s Eve or New Year’s Day, the beginning of a new calendar year invites us to reflect on the past and focus on the future.
At the New Year’s Eve dinner party we host nearly every year, I subject friends and family alike my list of discussion questions. We usually wind up sharing a little and laughing a lot. You can use my list (or make your own!) for personal reflection... READ MORE
Berry Yummy for the Fourth
Posted by Danielle Bean in Food on Tuesday, June 29, 2010
I happen to think that one of the most fun things about summertime holidays—like the Fourth of July coming up this weekend—is planning fun dishes and desserts to serve at family gatherings.
In my browsing of cooking sites, this Berry Parfait looked easy and delicious.
Rachel shared a yummy flag cake last year as well.
There are a number of festive dessert recipes at Food Network too, especially Paula Deen’s Simply Delicious Strawberry Cake... READ MORE
What Do You Want for Mother's Day?
Posted by Danielle Bean in Family on Monday, May 03, 2010
In anticipation of Mother’s Day (next Sunday, May 9), here’s the thread where I get to link to one of my favorite Mother’s Day cartoons. But it’s also the one you get to participate in and then sent the link to your husband and kids.
Last year, we had a great discussion about the disappointment many moms feel on Mother’s Day and other special occasions.
This year, let’s start talking early and hopefully avoid some of those disappointments ... What do you long for from your family on Mother’s Day? What do you expect?

Tell Us About Your Tree
Posted by Danielle Bean in Family on Monday, December 21, 2009
We finally put up our Christmas tree yesterday afternoon.
“Now it’s SUPER almost-Cwismass!” squealed a very excited Daniel.
He’s three.
I happen to think that three years old is the perfect age for maximum holiday enjoyment. They are old enough to remember last year and to fully participate this year, but young enough so that not a bit of the grinchies or gimmies have entered their sweet little hearts... READ MORE
Happy Memorial Day
Posted by Rebecca Teti in Family on Monday, May 25, 2009
I wanted to share with you some advice a Navy chaplain serving at our parish once gave to kids at a school mass on the Friday before Memorial Day.
(I liked it so much I wrote it down.)
He asked the students to sit for a few moments before he gave the final blessing, and then told them:
I know you’re not sorry to have a day off on Monday, and I hope you enjoy the weekend, but I also hope you’ll remember... READ MORE
