I Make All Things New

Movie Still: The Passion of the Christ

Msgr. Charles Pope has a moving reflection on the power of God to transform curses into blessings.

It’s also an explanation of one of the most controversial—and ironic—lines of Scripture.

His blood be on us and on our children! Never a truer word was spoken. And by it we are saved.

Watching To Do Good

papal advice for the Sacred Triduum

At yesterday’s audience, the Holy Father offered some advice about how to live the next three days.

He offers a brief explanation of the various rites and their origins.

Explaining the genesis of adoration at the altar of repose which will take place this evening, the Pope recounts Christ’s withdrawal into Gethsemane after the Last Supper:

Conscious of his imminent death on the cross, he felt great... READ MORE

Music For Holy Week

what are your favorites?

We often discuss Advent & Christmas music here, but some of the most hauntingly gorgeous melodies ever written honor Christ’s Passion.

Above is Ah, Holy Jesus, which is my current favorite.

Here are the lyrics.

The second verse I find absolutely devastating (and cathartic). The line, “I crucified thee,”  which resolves the melodic tension of the previous measures, sends chills up my spine and... READ MORE

iConfess

vote for the best Confession promo video

Several excellent videos promoting Confession have turned up in my Facebook feed this Lent. Here’s one:

Only this morning, however, did I realize they’re entries in a contest to promote the Archdiocese of New York’s All Day Confession event April 18th.

There’s an amazing variety of entries, and the winner will be chosen in part by how many hits and “likes” the videos get, so go check out a few.

Holy Days Ahead

In observance of the Triduum, things will be a bit more quiet and reflective here for the next few days. The bloggers have these days off and we won’t be posting our usual Coffee Talk discussions, Small Successes posts, or podcasts until after Easter.

Blessings to you and your family for a holy and fruitful Easter Triduum!

A Clean Sweep for Holy Week

Join me?

It’s traditional to give your house a good scrubbing during Holy Week, in preparation for Easter. If you’ve been participating in our 40 Bags in 40 Days challenge this Lent, you already have a head start.

I thought it might be helpful (for me!) to post a schedule to keep us on track and focused on getting the whole house clean this week:

Monday: garage, basement, outdoor areas, entryways

Tuesday:... READ MORE

Christ's Vicar & The Cross

Archbishop Dolan of New York has good advice about the abuse crisis and attacks on the Pope.

He made these remarks after Palm Sunday Mass yesterday.

I found them helpful and hope you do, too.

You may also appreciate George Weigel’s analysis.

Let’s keep the Pope close in our hearts and prayers this Holy Week, and pray also for the whole Church: for sinners, for their victims, for those scandalized and tempted against their faith, for those bearing the shame of crimes they didn’t commit, and for those attacking the Church and the pope for any and all motives.

Christ bore the cross for all these things, and he alone can fully heal them.

Holy Week Traditions

Please share yours!

I don’t have a great attention span, and it’s a struggle for me to stay focused during the long haul of Lent. So I love Holy Week, because it gives me a chance to make that last push before we celebrate the Resurrection really count.

For a while I’ve had a tradition to make an extra sacrifice during the week leading up to the Triduum.

One crazy Holy Week during my college years I gave up eating everything... READ MORE

This week on the podcast (click here to listen or click on the player above), some great listener feedback from Maryan Vander Woude prompts Arwen, Sarah and me to have a great discussion on the topic of how to inform children in an age appropriate way about issues of physical safety.  We discuss the challenges of everyday situations such as how to handle little boys who need to use a public restroom... The Road to Easter Day

Children's book brings the events of Holy Week to life!

Many mothers struggle with how to share the events and liturgies of Holy Week with their little ones.  A wonderful new book from Pauline Books and Media entitled The Road to Easter Day can help you share these precious stories with your child.

This picture book by author Jan Godfrey is sure to become a Lenten and Easter classic in your home.  It tells the story of Ben, a young boy who observes the... READ MORE
