Winter Decorating

Perking up the house after Christmas

When I was a kid I dreaded the end of the Christmas season when Mom took the decorations down. The house looked bereft without them.

As an adult I have more control - this explains why our tree is still up even though it’s Ordinary Time now - but eventually the greenery and twinkle lights must go. On that January day, I’m inevitably left looking around my living room feeling sad at its bareness.

Only... READ MORE

An Apple A Day

an Autumn potpourri

My boys don’t always get around to eating an entire apple, and somedays I will find a few half-eaten Fuji’s resting around my kitchen counters.

The perfect solution (besides trying to track down the offending party and telling him to finish this apple!) is to cut up the remaining, oft dried-out fruit and throw into a saucepan of water. Add to that a few sticks of cinnamon and you have the perfect... READ MORE

3 Ways To Survive Baseball Season

You can do this

I’ve been getting some baseball email from newbie baseball moms. They go something like this:

“Are these people serious???”

and

“How am I supposed to get anything done with this crazy schedule???”

and

“This is INSANE!!!!”

To which I reply: “Yes, they are serious” and “No, you will not get anything done and you just need to make your peace with that” and “Yes, it is insane, but it can be a little bit... READ MORE

40 Days, Again

Let's Take Out the Trash

Do you remember last Lent, when we talked about 40 Bags in 40 Days? I do—I remember it with fondness.

I was a champion trash-tosser last year, in large part because I was eight-months-pregnant and everyone knows that Nesting + Lenten Purging = a Spotless Home.

Mine was a true success story. I loved every minute of filling those bags and nearly twelve months later, I am still reaping the benefits of... READ MORE

Clean Sweep

Getting ready for Lent

My home is still an explosion of love—red construction paper hearts decorate the dining room, glittery hearts hang on a door. It’s all still here, reminding us of our Valentine’s celebration and it’s a festive spot in the sometimes dreary winter months.

But Lent begins next week, and there is something very non-Lenten about this celebratory scene. I’m hanging on to all of it until Shrove Tuesday,... READ MORE

Every Mom Works

I was intrigued by the variety of comments from at-home moms and all manner of working moms Daria Sockey received on her feature article about choosing to stay home. I thought it might be a good idea for this week’s poll to ask Faith & Family readers about their working status. Care to take part? Just scroll down in the right sidebar and share your response. Thanks!

Walking Through Winter

How's the weather where you are?

After seeing Lisa’s video of natural beauty and warm weather in California over the weekend, I was inspired to share a bit of our snowy wonderland this morning. Take a short walk with me through the chilly New Hampshire woods!

On the Importance of Scented Candles

and other frivolous things

I almost decided not to write this post.

Every time I write about something even a little bit frivolous that makes me happy in my homemaking, I am sure to hear from a few disappointed readers.

There are more important things to write about. Of course there are.

There are holier things to write about. Of course there are.

There are brainier things to write about. Of course there are.

But I can’t help... READ MORE

Confessions of a Failed Seamstress

It was an arduous outing. It nearly sapped every ounce of my strength. But my fortitude prevailed, and I survived ... yesterday’s trip to the fabric store.

I do not sew. Yes, I’m sure that would make my Mom crazy. She would sew matching mother-daughter outfits for us when I was little. She sewed cool dresses and matching bonnets for me and my sister for “Pioneer Day” at school. She was the marvelous... READ MORE

Leave the Suitcase in the Closet

How do you feel about the "staycation"?

Today is Monday, but it feels like Saturday.

To be exact, it feels like Saturday after a really long week.

My husband was out of town from dawn on the Friday before last until late this past Saturday night. He was working long hours, mostly out of cell-phone range.

Nine days of that (on top of two week-long trips he took in August) gave me a new respect for military wives.

Here’s the good part:... READ MORE
